MS Dhoni may not have been leading the CSK but he still remains their face. With the side struggling, this season MS Dhoni has shown that he can still instill fear in opponents despite batting down the order. While CSK were not in as bad a situation in 2010, it was MS Dhoni who helped lead the charge twelve years ago, saving CSK in a must win game at Dharamashala against the Kings XI Punjab.
twelve years later, MS Dhoni has endured some average seasons, and criticism and is now coming in as low as number seven. He is no more the skipper of the Chennai Super Kings but after eight games, Dhoni continues to show glimpses that he can scare the bowlers.
The Chennai Super Kings have struggled all season with the openers struggling to form partnerships, Moeen Ali not finding form, and the bowling looking very inconsistent. They lost three games with very close margins, and in an ideal world those were three games that should have been closed out by the Chennai Super Kings.
Twice this season, MS Dhoni has tried to save his side and was almost successful once. Against the Mumbai Indians, Chennai found themselves in a spot of bother as they almost ruined a chase in which they looked very comfortable. With 17 to get in the last over, MS Dhoni, along with Dwaine Pretorious saved CSK, getting them over the line and to their second win.
Before the win against Mumbai, MS Dhoni made a half-century against KKR to save CSK from embarrassment. The side was reeling in the innings, losing quick wickets and struggling to up the scoring rate. MS Dhoni played in his usual manner, taking the innings towards the end and ensuring CSK get something on the board.
He tried to do the same against the Punjab Kings, but was unsuccessful, walking in at 40 for five. He still managed to hang around, and helped reduce the margin of defeat despite striking poorly. With three varying performances though, Dhoni has shown that he still has what it takes to continue saving CSK. With Ravindra Jadeja out of form, the responsibility has fallen on CSK’s biggest player as he looks to save CSK one more time.
He almost saved them against PBKS in the rematch, instilling fear in the opponents even though the situation looked very unlikely. With 27 to get off six balls the situation is ideally in the bowlers favour, but with MS Dhoni out in the middle, there was a lot of talk about pressure being on the bowler. After a first ball six, the heat was truly on, but Dhoni unfortunately couldn’t carry on as he mistimed a ball to mid-wicket, ending CSK’s hopes in a game that could have been won in an easier manner than it seemed in the last few overs.
With Ravindra Jadeja struggling as captain, the latest news comes as a change for CSK. Ravindra Jadeja has decided to hand the captaincy back to Dhoni, putting further responsilbiy on the old warhorse. While MS Dhoni relishes pressure, the situation is not so ideal. The Chennai Super Kings are in a situation where they need to win each game to stand a chance of qualifying, and going by current form that seems tough.
With six wins needed in six games, this is likely to be the greatest heist if CSK magically pull it off. It is very very unlikely, but with Dhoni back at the helm you just never know whats in store, and one can only hope that MS Dhoni does his magic yet again.
