The Hundred has experienced three dynamic seasons since it began in 2021. Manchester Originals had a modest beginning, securing 6th place in the inaugural season. However, they demonstrated notable progress in the second season of 2022, finishing in 2nd place and advancing through the Eliminator, ultimately losing to Trent Rockets in the finals. In 2023, Manchester Originals continued their strong form, once again finishing 2nd and making it through the Eliminators, but falling short in the finals against Oval Invincibles.
As the fourth season of 2024 unfolds, Manchester Originals are encountering significant struggles. They have failed to secure a win in their first four matches, resulting in 4 losses and a net run rate of -1.464, placing them at the bottom of the table. This stark contrast to their previous seasons’ successes highlights the challenges they face this year. The team will need to make substantial improvements to turn their season around and climb up from the bottom of the standings.

Batting Struggles
Manchester Originals have had a challenging season so far in The Hundred 2024. Across four matches, their batting has been underwhelming, accumulating 474 runs from 399 balls with 27 outs. This results in a low average of 17.56 and a strike rate of 118.80. Their highest score in an innings is 153, with a total of 40 fours and 14 sixes. The low strike rate and frequent loss of wickets have been significant issues, hindering their ability to build substantial innings.
Bowling Difficulties
Their bowling performance has also been lackluster. In four matches, they have conceded 515 runs from 335 balls, taking only 18 wickets. With an economy rate of 9.22, an average of 28.61, and a strike rate of 18.61, their best bowling figures stand at 8/141. They have given away 45 fours and 16 sixes. Notably, they have bowled only 123 dot balls, significantly fewer than other teams, and their inability to take wickets consistently has allowed opponents to score freely.
Powerplay Performance
In the first five overs of the powerplay, Manchester Originals have scored 130 runs from 120 balls, losing 8 wickets, the second-highest wickets lost in the powerplay phase among teams. This results in an average of 16.25 and a strike rate of 108.33, with their highest score being 56. Conversely, their bowling in the powerplay has been problematic. They have conceded 189 runs from 120 balls, taking just 5 wickets, with an economy rate of 9.45, an average of 37.80, and a strike rate of 24.00, including 48 dot balls. Their inability to bowl dot balls and take wickets has led to a high run leakage in the powerplay.
Middle Overs Issues
In the middle overs, Manchester Originals have scored 326 runs from 264 balls, losing 17 wickets, resulting in an average of 19.18 and a strike rate of 123.48, with their highest score being 102. Their bowling in this phase has also been inadequate, conceding 301 runs from 206 balls and taking only 12 wickets. With an economy rate of 8.77, an average of 25.08, and a strike rate of 17.17, they have bowled only 70 dot balls. The inability to take wickets regularly and the high economy rate have allowed opponents to score heavily in the middle overs.
Death Overs Challenges
In the death overs, Manchester Originals' batting has managed just 18 runs from 15 balls, losing 2 wickets, with an average of 9.00 and a strike rate of 120.00. On the bowling front, they have performed poorly, conceding 25 runs from 9 balls in 2 matches, taking only 1 wicket, with an economy rate of 16.67, an average of 25.00, and a strike rate of 9.00. These stats reflect significant issues in closing out innings, both in batting and bowling.
Overall, Manchester Originals have struggled to take wickets consistently and have leaked runs across all phases of the game while bowling very few dot balls. This has created significant troubles for the team. Additionally, the lack of standout performers and Phil Salt's poor form, coupled with Jos Buttler's injury, have compounded their problems, leaving them at the bottom of the table.
