Suryakumar Yadav, often hailed as the best T20 batter of the modern generation, has faced criticism for not delivering in crucial matches, particularly in T20 World Cups. Despite his remarkable skills and consistency in the 20-over format, questions have been raised about his performance under pressure against top teams. His detractors argue that while he shines in regular games, he falters when the stakes are highest, casting a shadow over his otherwise stellar reputation.
This marks Suryakumar’s third appearance in a T20 World Cup. In the previous two editions, he managed to score three half-centuries, with two of them coming against lesser teams like the Netherlands and Zimbabwe. Between these knocks, he did play a notable innings of 68 off 40 balls on a challenging Perth wicket against South Africa.
However, that effort proved insufficient to secure a win for India. Furthermore, his inability to make a significant impact in the semi-final against England in the 2022 T20 World Cup, followed by a lackluster performance against Australia in the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, amplified the criticisms surrounding his capability in high-stakes matches.
However, on June 20, the 33-year-old showcased exactly why he is regarded as one of the finest T20 batters in the business. In a crucial match, Suryakumar silenced his critics with a stellar performance, reaffirming his position as a top-tier player in the format. This innings not only highlighted his immense talent but also underscored his ability to rise to the occasion, proving that he can indeed deliver when it matters the most.

The pitch at Kensington Oval was noticeably better than the one in New York, yet it remained on the slower side, making run-scoring a challenge. Despite this, Suryakumar Yadav made batting look effortless, coming in at No. 4 and smashing 53 off just 28 deliveries. His brilliant innings played a crucial role in propelling India to an above-par total of 181, highlighting his ability to perform under pressure and adapt to difficult conditions.
When SKY walked in to bat at the end of the seventh over, India was in a precarious position. Rishabh Pant had made a quick 20 off 11 balls, but both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli struggled, collectively taking 37 deliveries to score just 32 runs. The situation was further complicated by Afghanistan’s ace legspinner Rashid Khan, who was in the midst of a superb spell and had already taken the wickets of Pant and Kohli. With India at 62/3 in 8.3 overs following Kohli’s dismissal, the responsibility fell squarely on SKY to anchor the innings and boost the run rate.
With India three wickets down, Suryakumar Yadav had the option to play it safe against Rashid Khan, a tactic no one would have questioned given the circumstances. However, SKY’s approach was different. In the very over where Rashid dismissed Kohli, SKY responded by going down on one knee and sweeping it for a boundary. He repeated the shot with the same result in Rashid’s next over and then launched one over deep square leg, asserting his dominance. Impressively, 14 of SKY’s 16 runs against Rashid came from various sweep strokes.
Rashid Khan’s spell was otherwise lethal, with the legspinner bowling 18 deliveries to the other Indian batters, conceding just 10 runs and taking three wickets. Yet, SKY was undeterred. Facing Rashid for six balls, SKY amassed 16 runs, including two fours and a six, effectively neutralizing Rashid’s threat. This fearless and calculated aggression showcased SKY’s exceptional skill and confidence in handling one of the world’s best bowlers.
Azmatullah Omarzai experienced a similar onslaught, with SKY hitting him for 18 runs off eight deliveries. SKY’s audacious approach against both Rashid and Omarzai played a pivotal role in shifting the momentum of the game, underscoring his unique ability to thrive under pressure and dismantle formidable bowling attacks with ease.
