With an outstanding and intense display of cricketing action, the second week of the 2024 T20 World Cup in the USA and West Indies marks the end of enthralling group-stage matchups.

As a result, out of the 20 robust teams, only eight have made it through the second group-stage round, the Super-8. That said, here is a ranking of the team’s performances in the tournament’s second week.

1. West Indies

Unsurprisingly, the tournament’s co-host, West Indies, is sealing the first spot in this week’s performance ranking. By winning all four group stage matches, the team are the Group-C table toppers.

Their recent performance against Afghanistan was the cherry on top, where Nicholas Pooran made a swashbuckling innings of 98 runs off 53 balls. The team has proved a strong contender for the tournament, especially after their recent forgettable tournament stints.

2. Australia

Hailed for their determined mentality and consistency, Australia has proved it again in the tournament’s second week. They have scalped all the group-stage wins by topping the Group-B table.

With commendable performances with the bat and ball and not to forget Mitchell Marsh’s efficient captaincy, the Aussies would be eager to display the same in the upcoming Super-8, where they would be up against the likes of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and India.

3. South Africa

South Africa pulled off its consistent form in the second week of the tournament, where they won all the matches of the Group-D table, making them its table toppers.

Though the team has had some underwhelming time with the bat, but they have a robust and reliable bowling unit of Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Tabriaz Shamshi, and many more. This makes them a promising contender of the tournament in the upcoming matches of the game.

4. India

India, as usual, has displayed its best game calibre and was able to be the table toppers of Group A by winning three matches out of four. With a commendable and in-depth bowling attack, the team has questions about the batting unit.

Especially concerning Virat Kohli’s performance and the middle-order’s lack of intent. But, with the conditions changing from the USA to the West Indies, things might take a turn for the Indian side in the upcoming Super-8 matches.

5. Afghanistan

Afghanistan’s stint in this tournament was a surprise package of top-notch performance. The team has a strong backing with the bat and ball in the form of robust players like Rashid Khan, Fazalhaq Farooqi, and Rahmanullah Gurbaz. They have been in the form of their lives.

Though their last group-stage match against West Indies has been a turmoil of a one, as they lost by a colossal 104 runs, they are eager to make a comeback with a bang in the Super-8.

6. Bangladesh

Bangladesh was also one of the surprise teams to enter the Super-8, especially considering the level of competition amongst the 20 teams.

With an optimum mix of experience and backing from emerging players, the team was able to seal a spot in the Super-8. They have scalped wins against Nepal, Netherlands, and Sri Lanka in the group stage format.

7. England

England, the defending T20 World Cup champions, have made it through the Super-8, especially after their win at the hands of its arch-rivals, Australia.

As mentioned in the previous week’s write-up, the team has maintained its performance grip with its bowling attack. With a competitive Super-8 coming ahead, the team must focus on its batting to obtain success in the tournament.

8. USA

The tournament’s co-hosts, the USA, is the biggest surprise of impeccable performances by an underdog in the history of major ICC events.

Thanks to the robust pillar of support of the captain, Monank Patel, Adam Jones and the fast bowler and software engineer Saurabh Netravalkar, the team became the only ICC associate member to seal a spot in the Super-8. It is no surprise to see them make a mark in the final stages of the tournament.

9. Scotland

Scotland has been one of the teams that have received applause for their valiant effort amongst the high-class and robust teams. In their four-match group stage campaign, the team was able to scalp two wins (against Namibia and Oman), one loss (against Australia) and one rainwash game (against England).

Even with a positive net run rate (+1.255), England had a better NRR (+3.611),  which got them to seal the final spot with Australia from the tournament’s Group B.

10. New Zealand

New Zealand not qualifying for the Super-8 would indeed be a shocker for many. But after a forgettable first week against Afghanistan and West Indies, the Kiwis sighed relief by winning against Uganda and PNG.

But this signifies that not winning crucial matches against crucial opponents led to the team’s downfall in the ongoing tournament.

11. Netherlands

Like the Scottish side, even the Netherlands’ arsenal gave its fullest in the tournament, especially when the competition was up against several powerhouses.

In their group-stage campaign, the team was up against the robust sides and has just scalped a mere one win out of their four matches, which was only up against Nepal.

12. Namibia

Namibia has been under various cricket fanatics’ radar, mainly thanks to David Wiese’s all-rounding comeback. Even Namibia has had a mediocre stint in the 2024 T20 WC, where they scalped just one win out of their four matches.

Indeed, this tournament would give a memorable ending for the veteran and experienced all-rounder David Wiese

13. Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka, the 2014 T20 WC champions, has had a turmoil of a stint in the recent T20 WC edition. With their team only scalping one win out of four matches, Wanindu Hasaranga’s team had a lot of pointers to work on.

These mainly revolved around the lack of output from experienced campaigners and a disastrous batting display, making them getting knocked out from the Super-8 race as early as possible.

14. Pakistan

Just like New Zealand and Sri Lanka, the 2009 T20 WC champions, Pakistan, have not made it through the Super-8 stage of the tournament, which turned out to be a shocker for many fans.

With their second-week matches against the bleak Canada and Ireland, they have scalped the wins to end it on a sweet note but haven’t been convincing enough with the performance, especially with the bat.

15. Nepal

Nepal has been one of the ICC Associate members who hasn’t won much with the points but has got attention from many cricket spectators. They have not even won a single match out of the four games, with one being washed out.

But the team has proved its robust and determined mettle against strong opponents, which harnessed their praises on its promising future in the cricket’s world platform.

16. Canada

Canada has had a tournament to forget. In their first week, they showed a swashbuckling batting approach through their warm-up games and first encounter.

The team couldn’t maintain the same performance. In their four-match campaign, they have won just a mere one match.

17. Ireland

This tournament would be one of Ireland’s worst ICC campaigns, predominantly when the team comprises prominent, experienced players. In their second-week stint, they played against Pakistan, where they lost by three wickets.

They had a washout game against Canada. By this, they were the group-stage last position holders.

18. Uganda

Despite being an associate member, Uganda has played its first-ever major ICC tournament and has been a team that gave its best.

In their four group-stage match campaign, the team has won just one match against PNG.

19. PNG

Like Uganda, PNG has also been one of the ICC associate members who tasted such top-tier ICC tournaments for the first time.

With the backing of a bleak and inexperienced side, the team hasn’t scalped a win out of their four group-stage matches.

20. Oman

After PNG, Oman is the joint team that hasn’t won a single match out of all four group-stage matchups. In the first week, they displayed their promising intent against Namibia, which went up to the super over.

But they couldn’t continue with the same intent and have lost their remaining three matches against Australia, England and Scotland.
