Fourteen years ago, on June 12, a young Virat Kohli made his T20I debut for India at the Harare Sports Club against Zimbabwe. Fast-forward to June 12, 2024, as India prepares to face the USA in the T20 World Cup, Kohli stands as the second highest run-scorer in the format, amassing 4042 runs at an average of 50.52. Despite his impressive record, Indian fans have some concerns about their star batter.
In his last two matches, Virat Kohli has registered scores of 1 and 4 against Ireland and Pakistan. Despite his aggressive approach, the lack of runs has raised concerns for the team. However, Kohli has a history of silencing doubters. In the IPL, he proved critics wrong by leading RCB to the playoffs, often single-handedly, and winning the Orange Cap with 741 runs.
Speaking to Star Sports, Wasim Jaffer dismissed concerns about Kohli’s form. The former cricketer expressed confidence that Kohli will rise to the occasion as the tournament progresses. Jaffer noted that June 12, the anniversary of Kohli’s T20I debut, will be a significant day for him.
“Oh, definitely. It’s unusual for Virat Kohli to get out cheaply a couple of times. The wickets have played a part, and the conditions in New York haven’t been ideal for batting, which has affected the scores. But he’ll find his rhythm in this tournament. As soon as it heats up, you’ll see Kohli rise to the occasion. It’s a big day as it marks the anniversary of his T20I debut. He’s been phenomenal, and we need him to get those big runs. As we move into the Super 8s, we need him to stand up,” said Jaffer.
Brad Hogg, who was also part of the discussion, echoed Jaffer’s sentiments, expressing little concern over Kohli’s slow start. Hogg mentioned that Kohli’s late arrival in the USA has prevented him from fully adjusting to the conditions.

“Hopefully, tonight is the night. But I wouldn’t be too worried. I think we need to wait until the Super 8s—that’s when he really steps up. He had a bit of a break after the IPL and arrived late, so he hasn’t adjusted to the conditions as quickly as others. Indian fans shouldn’t worry. He’s supported by a strong batting lineup, especially with Pant coming in at No.3,” said Hogg.
As Kohli steps onto the field in New York, all eyes will be on him. The star batter is expected to deliver a special knock and guide India into the Super 8s in their final match at Nassau County Stadium.
