Ravichandran Ashwin Reflects Deeply in Interview with Anil Kumble.Ahead of His 100th Test, Ashwin Makes Significant ‘Second Fiddle’ Remark.Ravichandran Ashwin Set to Mark His 100th Test in Dharamsala.
As he gears up for the fifth match against England in Dharamshala on March 7, veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is poised to play his 100th Test. Ashwin, who recently joined the elite 500 Test wickets club, stands as the second Indian bowler after Anil Kumble to achieve this milestone, aligning himself with legendary names like Muthiah Muralitharan, Shane Warne, James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Glenn McGrath, Courtney Walsh, and Nathan Lyon.
Kumble highlighted that Ashwin’s journey to this milestone has been prolonged due to his frequent absences from the playing XI during India’s overseas tours. Since making his debut for the national team in 2011, the premier Indian off-spinner has solidified his position as one of the country’s cricketing icons.
Ashwin, often regarded as one of India’s most influential Test match performers since Anil Kumble, has faced consistent exclusions from the playing lineup in recent years. This trend appears almost inevitable, particularly during India’s tours to SENA countries, where historical batting depth deficiencies have often resulted in the selection of the more proficient batsman among the two champion spinners, Ravindra Jadeja and Ashwin.
Anil Kumble expressed his belief that Ravichandran Ashwin’s 100th Test match should have arrived much earlier, considering his talent and capabilities. Kumble emphasized the challenge Ashwin faced with limited opportunities in overseas tours, particularly in countries like England, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. Despite consistent performances, doubts arose regarding Ashwin’s adaptability to diverse conditions, overshadowing his prowess as a leading bowler.
In response, Ashwin refrained from controversy but candidly addressed the prevailing hierarchy where bowlers often play second fiddle to batsmen. He reflected on the disparity in opportunities, questioning why some players have more chances to overcome failures than others. However, Ashwin acknowledged the team’s paramount importance, prioritizing collective success over personal achievements. Despite disappointments, he found contentment in contributing to the team’s victories and cherished the opportunity to represent India alongside legendary cricketers.

Both Kumble and Ashwin stand as iconic figures in Indian cricket history, having surpassed the remarkable milestone of 500 wickets. Kumble, with a record 619 Test wickets, holds the distinction of being India’s most successful bowler. Meanwhile, Ashwin is set to join an elite group of Indian spinners, including Kumble and Harbhajan Singh, as only the third to feature in 100 Test matches. As India leads the ongoing series against England 3-1, all eyes are set on the fifth and final Test match in Dharamsala, scheduled to commence on Thursday.
