Although the hosts England had a great start in the five-match ODI series opener against Australia at Nottingham, Australian spinners controlled the English batters and restricted them to a modest first innings total.

After England chose to bat first, they managed to score 315 runs in 49.4 overs. English opener Ben Duckett scored 95 off 91 balls with the help of 11 fours, while the no.3 batter Will Jacks scored 62 off 56 balls. Also, captain Harry Brook (39) and debutant Jacob Bethell (35) scored important 30s.

Duckett and Jacks had a 120-run partnership for the second wicket after the first wicket partnership was broken at 48 runs. Later, Duckett and the skipper Brook had a 45-run partnership for the third wicket. However, since then, Aussie spinners took regular wickets to deny the hosts a huge total.
