BCCI considering bringing back the old rule
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) hasn’t officially set the retention rules for the next Indian Premier League (IPL) mega-auction. However, they might revive an old rule at CSK's request. This rule could help CSK retain their former captain MS Dhoni.
The old rule explained
The rule in question allows players who have been retired from international cricket for more than five years to be classified as uncapped. This rule was in place from the first IPL season until 2021, but it was removed because no team used it. According to a report from News18, CSK brought up this rule during a meeting with the BCCI on July 31, asking for it to be reinstated.
Support for the rule's return
Although CSK didn’t get much support from other teams, the BCCI seems to favor bringing the rule back. If it happens, CSK could keep Dhoni as an uncapped player while also holding onto other key players. A source mentioned that there’s a good chance the rule could be reinstated when the player regulations are announced.
Dhoni's future in the IPL
Dhoni recently mentioned at an event in Hyderabad that his future in the IPL depends on the retention rules for the next auction. He said, "Once the rules and regulations get formalized, I will decide, but it has to be in the best interest of the team."

Dhoni's current role and speculation
In 2022, Dhoni was retained by CSK for INR 12 crore. He stepped down as captain before the 2024 season, passing the role to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Former CSK player Ravichandran Ashwin also hinted at the possibility of Dhoni playing as an uncapped player, noting that since Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2019, he technically qualifies as uncapped. This move could open up new strategies for CSK in the upcoming IPL season.
