India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup and the next World Test Championship (WTC) could depend on how Rohit will perform in the ICC Champions Trophy final against New Zealand on Sunday. The BCCI wants stable Captaincy for the next two years and may use this match to decide the future of captain Rohit Sharma.

According to a Times of India report, the BCCI board is taking it difficult to move on from Rohit as captain in ODIs and Tests. They have also delayed announcing the new central contracts, waiting for the final of the ICC Champions Trophy against New Zealand before making a decision.

After returning from the Australia tour, head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar discussed the situation with the BCCI board and Rohit. During the talks, Rohit said he was open to long-term planning for the team but wanted to wait until after the Champions Trophy final.

"Rohit still feels he has some cricket left in him. The board has asked him to share his plans for the future. The decision to retire is up to him, but there will be another discussion about his captaincy. Rohit understands that if India wants to build for the next World Cup, they need a stable captain. There have been talks with Kohli too, but there’s no concern about him," a BCCI source told TOI.

Usually, the BCCI announces player contracts before the IPL. However, after a long Test season, they decided to wait until the Champions Trophy 2025 to evaluate player performances. Reports suggest that the board is considering changes to the top-tier (Grade A+) contracts, which currently include Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja.

Rohit, Kohli, and Jadeja might retire from T20Is, especially with a packed Test schedule ahead. As per BCCI rules, only those who perform well across all three formats usually get an A+ contract. However, if these senior players deliver strong performances in the Champions Trophy, they could still hold onto their top contracts in the BCCI.

Axar Patel, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant might be promoted to Grade A. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer, who lost his contract last year due to disciplinary reasons, is expected to get it back. Kohli’s brilliant performance in the Champions Trophy has further strengthened his contract with BCCI.

"The board will wait for Rohit’s decision after the Champions Trophy. If he chooses to retire, they will decide the next steps. We cannot ignore the fact that he won the T20 World Cup in July and has also led well in the Champions Trophy," the source added.

In the past, Virat Kohli had enough time to settle as captain after MS Dhoni stepped down from ODI Captaincy two years before the 2019 World Cup. Similarly, Rohit was given two years before the 2023 World Cup after Kohli stepped down in 2021. However, if the selectors decide to move on from Rohit now, the transition might take longer. The main challenge is that Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness is still a concern, and ODI vice-captain Shubman Gill does not have much experience as a Captain.
