BCCI, which is like the boss of cricket in India, told the players, if Indian cricket players want to play for their country, they need “prove” themselves in domestic cricket, as not playing will have “severe implications”.
They have to show their skills in the regular, local cricket matches too if they wanna play for India.” They warned that if players skip these matches, there will be big consequences.
This letter from the BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, is making people look at players like Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, and Deepak Chahar. These guys haven’t been in the national team lately. Iyer has a pretty good contract, Kishan’s contract is okay, and Chahar wasn’t even in the latest contracts list.
“However, there is a trend that has started to emerge and is a cause for concern. Some players have begun prioritising the IPL over domestic cricket, a shift that was not anticipated. Domestic cricket has always been the foundation upon which Indian cricket stands, and it has never been undervalued in our vision for the sport.
“It is essential to recognise that domestic cricket forms the backbone of Indian cricket and serves as the feeder line to Team India. Our vision for Indian cricket has been clear from the outset – every cricketer aspiring to play for India must prove themselves in domestic cricket. Performance in domestic tournaments remains a critical yardstick for selection, and non-participation in domestic cricket will carry severe implications.”
He also added, “”not a critique but a reminder of the values that have shaped Indian cricket over the years. It is a call to collectively ensure that we do not dilute the significance of domestic cricket or weaken its core structure. The responsibility rests with each one of us, as custodians of the game, to uphold the essence of domestic cricket and work together to elevate Indian cricket to newer heights.”

Kishan last played for India in a series against Australia, then he skipped the South Africa tour for personal reasons and got left out of the England series. He didn’t play for his state team in the Ranji Trophy and was just training with some other players.
Iyer got dropped from the Test team after not scoring much against England. He did play a bit in the Ranji Trophy but missed the last matches.
Chahar also took a break for personal stuff, got back in shape, but hasn’t played for his state team since December, although he played in some other smaller tournaments.
