Renowned all-rounder Ben Stokes has made the decision to exclude himself from England’s squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in June. Stokes, who played a pivotal role in England’s victory in the 2022 final, expressed to team management his desire not to be considered for selection, citing the need to prioritize his long-term fitness and performance as an all-rounder.

Following his heroic performance in the T20 World Cup final, Stokes has had limited participation in T20 matches, featuring in only two games during last year’s IPL. His decision to forego the World Cup stems from a desire to undergo necessary knee surgery and focus on recuperation. Despite previously retiring from ODI cricket, Stokes returned to the format to play in the 50-over World Cup last year, delaying his surgery in the process.

Stokes takes decision and shares…

“I’m working hard and focusing on building my bowling fitness back up to fulfil a full role as an allrounder in all formats of cricket,” he said. “Opting out of the IPL and the World Cup will hopefully be a sacrifice that allows me to be the allrounder I want to be for the foreseeable future.

“The recent Test tour of India highlighted how far behind I was from a bowling point of view after my knee surgery and nine months without bowling. I’m looking forward to playing for Durham in the County Championship before the start of our Test summer. I wish Jos [Buttler], Motty [Matthew Mott] and all the team the best of luck in defending our title.”

While Stokes had initially indicated his availability for the T20 World Cup, his recent surgery and ongoing recovery have led to his withdrawal from contention. England’s white-ball coach, Mott, had previously expressed confidence in Stokes’ return if fit, highlighting his invaluable contributions to the team’s balance.

Impact on England’s T20 World Cup strategy

In Stokes’ absence, England will explore alternative options, with Liam Livingstone emerging as a potential candidate for the No. 4 position. However, concerns have arisen regarding Livingstone’s fitness following a recent injury while fielding for Punjab Kings.

Despite Stokes’ decision potentially marking the end of his T20I career, he remains hopeful of representing England in future tournaments, including the 2026 T20 World Cup. At 34 years old by then, Stokes believes he still has much to offer on the international stage.
