In a major update for both the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) and the Big Bash League (BBL), Cricket Australia has introduced a Player Movement Window to boost team roster management and trade activity. This new 10-day trading period will open at the conclusion of each competition’s final match, allowing clubs to make trades and negotiate limited player transfers. The WBBL Player Movement Window will run from December 2 to December 11, 2024, while the BBL’s will take place from January 28 to February 6, 2025.
During the Player Movement Window, clubs will have the unique opportunity to make roster adjustments by trading players with other clubs, signing players from rival teams in the final year of their contracts, or trading Overseas Player Draft picks. Notably, this is the only chance for roster changes during the embargo period, creating a strategic time for teams to secure talent, adjust team dynamics, and prepare for the following season.
Rules and limitations for WBBL and BBL player trading explained
While this window opens new avenues for team strategies, it comes with specific limitations. Teams are restricted from re-signing or extending contracts with their current players until after the embargo lifts in March 2025. These rules help ensure that trading activity focuses on fresh talent moves and inter-team negotiations, rather than internal retention strategies. To meet roster requirements, WBBL teams may list up to eight players before the window and expand to ten players post-trade, while BBL clubs can list ten players prior to the window and twelve by the window’s conclusion.
Several prominent players, such as Lizelle Lee (Hobart Hurricanes) and Marizanne Kapp (Melbourne Stars) in the WBBL, as well as Finn Allen (Scorchers) and Sam Billings (Thunder) in the BBL, hold multi-year contracts that will factor into team strategies. With some high-profile players on multi-season contracts, teams will need to consider these restrictions as they explore available players and draft picks. Cricket Australia's Alistair Dobson views the Player Movement Window as a game-changing addition to the Big Bash calendar. “The Player Movement Windows will add certainty and stability for players and clubs at a crucial period in the list management cycle,” Dobson noted.

Increased excitement for fans and strategic opportunity for teams
Cricket Australia’s goal with this initiative is not only to facilitate smoother team management but also to provide fans and media with an extended period of Big Bash excitement. This trading window is expected to spark discussions around roster strategies and trades, keeping the Big Bash League relevant throughout the year. "These new milestones on the Big Bash calendar will increase talkability among fans, broadcasters, and the media as we grow our year-round presence," Dobson added.
With the third-highest purse of INR 73 crore, the trading window promises excitement as clubs race to secure top talent and optimize team lists for the next season. Teams now have a defined opportunity to reshape rosters strategically in the limited timeframe, adding to the excitement surrounding each league’s offseason activities.
