The CEO of the World Cricketers' Association (WCA), Tom Moffat has come down hard at the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and has targeted them for being "a repeat offender" in failing to pay the players on time. The league has been caught in the eye of the storm of late as in a shocking development, Durbar Rajshahi's overseas players boycotted their BPL match on Sunday because of non-payment of dues. As a result, the franchise was left with no option but to field all 11 home-grown local players in their playing eleven.

Taskin Ahmed, the Rajshahi's captain, even made a funny remark while addressing the media after the match stating that the cheques issued to the Bangladeshi players before the game must not bounce like a pitch. In the aftermath of this infamous incident, the BCB media chairman Iftekhar Rahman said that the board reportedly gearing up to pursue legal action against the Rajshahi franchise.

Moffatt expresses his shock over non-paid dues to the players

During a conversation with ESPNcricinfo, Moffatt expressed his disappointment over the non-payment issue emerging from the BPL and called in unacceptable. Moreover, he also added that the league has been a repeat offender in this regard and it is not the first time such an issue has come to light.

"It's disappointing to hear about more non-payment issues in the Bangladesh Premier League, which has been a repeat offender over a number of years. These issues are unacceptable, they aren't getting better, and it's the players who make the event that are impacted. In any league that is officially sanctioned, players should have confidence that their contracts have some basic protections and minimum standards in them and that they can be enforced efficiently."

The issue over non-payment of players first gained the spotlight during the 2012 and 2013 editions, well during the formative years of the league. Many players were reportedly unpaid by the franchises for several months. To add to their miseries, the BCB also had to suspend the tournament for a brief period as numerous corruption scandals came to light during that time.

Not all is going well with the Durbar Rajshahi franchise

Rajshahi as a franchise has attracted a lot of negative publicity in recent times. Ryan Burl and Aftab Alam, two of Rajshahi's overseas players, appeared for the team's last league match against Sylhet Strikers on Monday. However, it remains unclear whether the franchise owner Shafique Rahman has compensated them fully yet.

Besides, it is also learnt that even the Rajshahi's local players have shown discontent as they went on strike and boycotted several training sessions in the first two weeks of the tournament over non-paid dues. Rajshahi allegedly encountered difficulties in settling their hotel bill in Chattogram, leading to complications for their owner, Rahman, with the hotel management. Additionally, they faced reservation problems in Dhaka, necessitating an abrupt change of accommodations.
