“The disciplinary inquiry was carried out by the three-member inquiry panel into the alleged violations by the nationally contracted player”,

SLC stated adding

Karunaratne pleaded guilty to all charges brought against him, including breaking several clauses in the Player Agreement. In the past, it had been reported that Karunarante had been involved in a fight at a casino during the World Cup. Anyway, when addressed by the IANS, SLC didn’t uncover the specific charges against the bowling all-rounder.

“Considering the seriousness of the violations committed by Mr Karunaratne, the Inquiry Panel by its report has recommended to the Executive Committee of the SLC to strongly warn the player to refrain from further violations and to impose a punishment that will not have an impact on his cricketing career,”

SLC stated.

The SLC Executive Committee imposed a one-year ban from participating in any form of cricket in accordance with the findings and recommendations of the inquiry panel. The said ban was also suspended for a year. Additionally, Karunarante was assessed a 5,000 USD fine.

In addition, Karunarante has been left out of the ODI team that will play Afghanistan in a three-match series that begins on November 25 in Kandy.
