The recent revelation by the Election Commissioner of India has brought to light Chennai Super Kings (CSK), one of the most successful IPL franchise, and its promoter, India Cements, as significant donors to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) through electoral bonds. This disclosure, made on Sunday, March 17, highlights the political involvement of prominent cricket franchises and their stakeholders.
AIADMK, a Tamil Nadu-based political party led by MK Stalin, received INR 6.05 crore through electoral bonds between April 2 and April 4, 2019. CSK and its promoter, India Cements, contributed INR 5 crore to AIADMK via electoral bonds during this period. The revelation underscores the intersection of sports and politics, raising questions about the motivations behind such contributions.

CSK’s contributions to AIADMK were substantial, with the franchise donating electoral bonds worth INR 1 crore on three occasions. Additionally, they donated 29 bonds valued at INR 10 lakhs each, further solidifying their support for the political party. Most of the bonds redeemed by AIADMK were issued by India Cements and CSK, highlighting their significant financial backing.
Despite these political contributions, CSK’s plans for the upcoming IPL 2024 remain unaffected. The team has already commenced its preparations at the M Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, focusing on honing their skills and strategies for the tournament. The donations, while substantial, are unlikely to detract from CSK’s commitment to performing well on the cricket field.
CSK’s preparations for IPL 2024 are in full swing, with the team training rigorously to defend their title. Skipper MS Dhoni, who underwent knee surgery after the 2023 edition, has demonstrated remarkable progress during rehabilitation and is expected to lead the team in the upcoming season. Dhoni’s return to form has instilled confidence in the squad, bolstering their prospects for success.
CSK’s journey in IPL 2024 will kick off with a high-octane clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). The Faf du Plessis-led side will face RCB in their opening match, scheduled for March 22 at the M Chidambaram Stadium. However, CSK will be without Devon Conway for the tournament’s first half, paving the way for Rachin Ravindra to open alongside Ruturaj Gaikwad.
