In a significant move for the Sydney Thunder, veteran Australian batsman David Warner has been appointed as the team’s captain for the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season. This comes just weeks after Warner’s leadership ban was officially lifted, allowing him to assume a captaincy role once again. Warner takes over from Chris Green, who will remain with the team as a player.
A fresh start with leadership and experience
After a three-member panel deemed Warner eligible for captaincy, the seasoned opener expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead. "Captaining the Thunder again this season means a lot to me," Warner said. "I was part of the team from the start, and now to be back with that ‘C’ next to my name feels fantastic. I’m looking forward to leading from the front and sharing my experience with the young talent coming through."
Warner emphasized the importance of creating a balanced team environment that fosters camaraderie and team spirit both on and off the field. He envisions a setting where players can bond beyond the game, through shared meals, rounds of golf, and community engagements in Western Sydney. His aim, he stated, is to "build camaraderie and stay grounded," creating an inclusive atmosphere that nurtures both seasoned players and emerging talents.

Supporting the legacy of previous captains
Warner was quick to recognize the contributions of his predecessor, Chris Green, and former captain Jason Sangha. "I want to compliment the way Greeny led from the front," he added. "He's an exceptional talent with fantastic leadership qualities. Jason Sangha, too, before his injury. I gained great insight from both, and I know they're guys I can lean on this season."
Sydney Thunder is hoping Warner’s experience and leadership will energize the team, especially after a challenging previous season where they finished at the bottom of the BBL standings. With a fresh outlook under Warner’s captaincy, Thunder fans are optimistic for a turnaround performance in BBL 14.
The Big Bash League is set to kick off on December 15, with Sydney Thunder's first match scheduled against Adelaide Strikers in Canberra on December 17. Warner’s presence at the helm is expected to bring renewed energy and resilience to the team as they look to climb the league standings this season.
