The planned meeting of Indian Premier League (IPL) team owners has been delayed. Originally set for April 16 in Ahmedabad, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) informed franchise owners of the change due to alterations in the IPL schedule. A new meeting date hasn’t been decided yet, despite some franchises pushing back against increasing player retentions.

Discussion on IPL future plans

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss future plans for the IPL, particularly regarding the mega-auction next year. BCCI officials wanted to hear the owners’ thoughts on the number of players teams should be allowed to retain and the size of the player purse. There’s been talk of increasing retentions beyond the current limit of four and raising the player purse from the current Rs 100 crore cap.

However, some suggest that instead of increasing retentions, teams should have more Right To Match (RTM) options. This method, they argue, would be fairer and more transparent, as it’s based on market value. Concerns have been raised that player retentions could lead to under-the-table payments to players.

Schedule changes and meeting postponement

The RTM formula would let teams acquire their current players at a price set during the live auction. But there’s a downside: some teams might artificially inflate a player’s bidding price to force other teams to pay more, with the risk of having to buy the player at the inflated cost. While there’s been talk of allowing eight retentions, others argue for just one retention and seven RTM options. The BCCI hasn’t taken a clear stance yet.

The meeting between BCCI/IPL officials and franchise owners was supposed to take place during an IPL game between Gujarat Titans and Delhi Capitals in Ahmedabad. However, the game has been postponed by a day because the BCCI moved the Kolkata Knight Riders-Rajasthan Royals game at Eden Gardens to April 16. This change was due to Rama Navami celebrations in Kolkata, with city police raising security concerns.
