The clash between Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2024 season provided cricket fans with a thrilling spectacle as Delhi Capitals emerged victorious by 20 runs in a closely contested match at the Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA–VDCA Stadium, Visakhapatnam.
Rishabh Pant’s exceptional half-century and pacer Mukesh Kumar’s impactful bowling performance played crucial roles in Delhi’s triumph over the defending champions.
Playing at their new home ground, Delhi Capitals made a statement with their explosive batting display, led by David Warner and freshly recalled Prithvi Shaw. The dynamic duo orchestrated a formidable 93-run partnership by the halfway mark, putting Chennai Super Kings on the back foot and forcing quick changes to their bowling lineup.

Despite Capitals’ dominance, Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana turned the tide with his exceptional fielding prowess and bowling skills. Warner innings ended on 52 off 35 after which Shaw was dismissed for 43 off 27. Subsequently, his remarkable bowling performance saw him clean up Mitchell Marsh and Tristan Stubbs in the same over, disrupting Capitals’ batting rhythm and posing a significant challenge.
Amidst setbacks, Delhi Capitals’ skipper Rishabh Pant exhibited resilience and determination, compiling a crucial half-century after returning to professional cricket following a horrific car accident. Pant’s stellar innings, characterized by aggressive stroke play and composure under pressure, proved to be the difference-maker for the Capitals, steering them towards a much-needed victory. He was dismissed by Pathirana on 51 off 32 balls and DC eventually ended their 20 overs with a score of 191/5.
CSK’s chase got off to a rocky start as their on-song openers, Rachin Ravindra and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, failed to make an impact and were dismissed early in the innings. Following the early dismissals, CSK found themselves facing an uphill battle against Delhi Capitals’ disciplined bowling attack.
Middle-order batsmen Ajinkya Rahane and Daryll Mitchell struggled to maintain the required run rate, facing challenges in finding gaps and scoring boundaries against the tight bowling lines. Rahane eventually fell for 45 off 30.
Amidst the mounting pressure, CSK witnessed a late surge from former captain MS Dhoni and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who displayed their prowess with the bat and provided hope for a miraculous comeback. Dhoni’s elegant stroke-making and Jadeja’s aggressive approach injected momentum into CSK’s innings, offering glimpses of a potential turnaround. MS Dhoni scored 37 runs off 16 balls.
Several key moments defined the course of the match, including Khaleel Ahmed and Ishant Sharma’s early breakthroughs that put Chennai Super Kings on the back foot. Matheesha Pathirana’s crucial wickets further compounded Chennai’s woes, while Rishabh Pant’s explosive batting display tilted the scales in Delhi Capitals’ favor. The former CSK skipper MS Dhoni walked out to bat for the first time this season and treated the Vizag crowd to some delicious stroke-making.
