As the IPL 2024 season heats up, one story that captivates cricket fans worldwide is the resurgence of Dinesh Karthik. At 38, not only is he the oldest active Indian cricketer, but he’s also making a compelling case for inclusion in India’s T20 World Cup squad. Royal Challengers Bangalore’s head coach, Andy Flower, has been vocal about Karthik’s stellar performance, especially after a crucial game against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
In the current IPL season, Karthik has been nothing short of spectacular, scoring 226 runs in just 7 matches at a jaw-dropping strike rate of 205. His remarkable 83 off 35 balls in a high-stakes chase against Sunrisers Hyderabad exemplifies his batting prowess and crucial role in the team.

Karthik’s performances are not just numbers on a scorecard. They signify a player peaking at a crucial juncture, possibly influencing selectors’ decisions for the upcoming T20 World Cup.
Dinesh Karthik debuted for India in 2004, a seasoned campaigner known for his resilience and adaptability. Over the years, Karthik has been a part of many memorable moments in Indian cricket, including his famous last-ball six in the Nidahas Trophy final against Bangladesh in 2018.
According to Andy Flower, “Dinesh Karthik is really making a push for the World Cup team as well and is only getting better on the field.” His leadership and skill execution under pressure have impressed many, including the RCB coaching staff.
Despite Karthik’s heroics, RCB has struggled this season, with six losses in seven games. However, Flower highlights the positive aspects, particularly the fighting spirit shown during high-scoring matches. Beyond his batting, Karthik’s experience and guidance are invaluable, especially in mentoring younger players and strategizing during crucial moments.
He remarked, “It was a really tough night in the field of course as they finished so powerfully that it probably took the wind out of our souls. We will have a think and we will come back stronger, It is obviously knockout time and every game is like a semi-final for us.”
RCB will play their upcoming match in the IPL at the Eden Gardens on Sunday.
