The India Premier League (IPL) is one of the most recognized cricket leagues. From the time it has started in 2008 its popularity has grown significantly, leading to the best players coming in, huge audiences, and revenue pouring in from all the parts of the world. As the years went by, more teams were added to the league as it’s popularity grew. But, is there a possibility of new teams being added in near future? Lets examine this question.
So Far How IPL Has Expanded
In its initial season in 2008 the IPL had 8 teams to start off with. As the league progressed there were a few changes in the league with some teams being added while some taken out. In 2011 the two new teams Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala were added which moved the total count to ten. Unfortunately these teams left after a few years.
IPL expanded one more time in 2022 when it added two more teams and this time it was the Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants. With the addition of these teams it increased the level of excitement and competition as it moved back to having 10 teams.
So, why pour money into just 10 teams? The IPL is anything but shy in his cash generated. In 2022, the brand value skyrocketed to a whopping 11 billion dollars, coupled with a remarkable 6 billion dollar media rights deal from 2023 to 2027. More franchises equates to an increase in ticket and sponsorship raises and inevitably increases fan excitement. Already, the new franchises in cities known as Ahmedabad and Lucknow have shown what powerful fans are willing and waiting to be showcased. Then, consider the talent matrix. Lucknow and Ahmedabad only being the tip of the iceberg, the pool of available players is nearly limitless because India is well-known for being obsessed with cricket. The IPL has been host to remarkable phenomenal names including Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya. With only 10 available teams, numerous youngsters remain in waiting. An increase in the number of franchises means the increase in available spots for far more unbelievably talented players to take the stage.
When Can We Expect More Teams?
The BCCI has dropped a few hints of further expanding the IPL, but at the most it will be a slow undertaking. According to various sources, the league may include 12 franchises some time within the following couple of years, potentially by 2026 or 2027. Regardless, the outcome is a direct result of numerous conditions that include the player’s workload and the sponsor’s financial interest.
