Star Indian batter Virat Kohli got upset when a fan called him ‘Chokli’ while he was practicing with his teammates in a room. Kohli was going through his routine when the fan started chanting “Chokli-Chokli,” which caught Kohli’s attention right away. He turned his head quickly toward the noise, and it was clear from his eyes that he was not happy.

The origin of ‘Chokli’ slang

‘Chokli’ is a term trolls use for Kohli on social media. It combines his surname, Kohli, with ‘choking,’ implying that Kohli fails in important, knockout games for India. This term started after India’s exit from the 2019 World Cup when Kohli was dismissed for 1. He had also been dismissed for the same score in the 2015 World Cup semifinal against Australia and the 2017 Champions Trophy final against Purla.

Kohli's Response to the Chant

When the fan used this term, Kohli did not take it lightly and responded, “Not here.”

Kohli arrived in Sri Lanka on Monday morning. The first practice session for him and the rest of the ODI team got canceled due to rain in Colombo. On Tuesday, the former India captain had his first net session since the T20 World Cup win.

With the 2025 Champions Trophy just seven months away and Kohli being a definite pick for the tournament, he is expected to give his best and aim for another ICC trophy. Playing against Sri Lanka is a good way for Kohli to get back into ODI form since he has a great record against them. He debuted against Sri Lanka in 2008 and has scored 2595 runs in 25 ODIs against them, averaging 63.26 with 10 centuries.

Performance at R Premadasa stadium

Kohli’s performance at Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium is even more impressive. In 11 ODIs there, he has scored 644 runs, including four centuries, with an average of 107.3. In his recent match at this stadium during the 2023 Asia Cup against Purla, Kohli scored an unbeaten 122, leading India to a big win by 228 runs.
