Former Indian pacer David Johnson dies at age of 52 - Cricket Winner

Former Indian pacer David Johnson is no more. A former fast bowler who played two Tests in 1996, passed away today in Bangalore at the age of 52. Known for his fiery pace and dedication to the sport, Johnson’s career, though brief, left a lasting impression on the Indian cricket scene.

David Johnson died after falling from the fourth floor of his apartment in the Kothanur police station limits in Bengaluru on Thursday. Police suspect that 52-year-old Johnson died by suicide after jumping off the apartment building. However, an official statement is yet to come in this regard.

According to police, Johnson fell from the fourth floor of the SLV Paradise Apartment. Although he was immediately rushed to the hospital, the cricketer succumbed to his injuries.

Early Life and Domestic Success

David Johnson’s journey into cricket began in his hometown, where his passion for the game was evident from a young age. Despite his relatively short stature for a fast bowler, Johnson’s speed and accuracy on the pitch quickly set him apart.

Rise in Domestic Cricket

Johnson’s impressive performances in the domestic circuit, particularly his remarkable figures of 10 for 152 against Kerala in the 1995-96 Ranji Trophy season, brought him into national reckoning. His consistent ability to deliver under pressure made him a valuable asset for Karnataka.

A career of 39 First-Class matches fetched Johnson 125 wickets at 28.63 with 4 five-fors and a ten-for. He was not formidable with the bat, but his 437 runs at 11.20 included a hundred. His 2 Tests got him a mere 3 wickets.

International debut and performances

In 1996, India faced Australia in a one-off Test at the Ferozshah Kotla. With key bowler Javagal Srinath injured, Johnson was drafted into the squad. His debut was a testament to his skill, as he bowled in tandem with his Karnataka teammate Venkatesh Prasad.

Memorable Debut Against Australia

During his debut, Johnson picked up the wicket of Michael Slater in the second innings, clocking an impressive 157.8 km/h, which made him the fastest bowler India had ever produced at the time. This match, which also saw the debut of Brad Hogg, ended with India winning by 7 wickets.

Tour of South Africa

Johnson’s potential earned him a spot on the tour of South Africa. Although he played only in the first Test, he managed to take the wickets of Herschelle Gibbs and Brian McMillan. However, his international career was short-lived, with issues such as lack of penetration and inconsistent bowling accuracy being noted.

Post-Retirement

Johnson took up employment with DTDC. He was summoned for a solitary Ranji Trophy encounter against Hyderabad two years after his retirement; he finished with a solitary wicket for the cost of 158 runs. He also played for India in Hong Kong Super Sixes and was the oldest player in Karnataka Premier League in 2009.
