According to a source that cites a letter that BCCI president Sourav Ganguly recently issued to the organisation’s affiliated associations, the first season of the women’s IPL is anticipated to begin in early 2023. There have been calls to replicate the success of the men’s IPL, which began in 2008 and has experienced tremendous expansion, ranking it among the most lucrative sports leagues in the world.

Sourav Ganguly, the president of the BCCI, informed the state organisations on Tuesday that the Women’s IPL is scheduled to begin early in 2019. In a letter to all state organisations, Ganguly outlined key issues about the domestic and international home schedule for 2022–23. He made reference in the letter of the BCCI’s efforts to create a women’s IPL.

“The BCCI is currently working on the much-awaited Women’s IPL. We are expecting to start the first season early next year,” read the document in possession of NDTV.

“More details on this will follow in the due course,” Ganguly added in the letter.

“The next season of men’s IPL will also go back to the home and away format with all ten teams playing their home matches at their designated venues,”

read Ganguly’s letter.

While the knockout matches were played in Kolkata and Ahmedabad last year, the IPL league matches were spread among four sites in Mumbai and Pune. Gujarat Titans won their first championship by defeating Rajasthan Royals in the championship game in Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium.

In a letter to the state associations, Ganguly informed them that after the end of the T20 World Cup in Australia, the Indian men’s team will play New Zealand and Sri Lanka at home, while the Indian women’s team will host Australia.

Besides launching the women’s IPL, the board will also start an Under-15 tournament for the girls.

“We are glad to introduce a girls’ U-15 tournament from this season. Women’s cricket has seen phenomenal growth across the world, and our national team has been performing well. This new tournament will create a pathway for our girls to play at the international level,”

Ganguly wrote.

Two Irani Cups will be held at BCCI venues: one in October of this year and one in March of the next year. While Madhya Pradesh, who won the Ranji Trophy this year, will play against the rest of India in Indore next year, Saurashtra, the 2019–20 Ranji Trophy champions, will play against the rest of India at Rajkot in October.
