The fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 between India and Australia will take place in Sydney, but there is uncertainty about whether Indian captain Rohit Sharma will be part of the playing XI. With India trailing 1-2 in the series, this match is very important for them to level the series and keep their chances of making it to the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final alive.
Rohit Sharma’s recent form has raised concerns. In the first three matches of the series, he has only scored 31 runs, which has disappointed many. His performance came under more scrutiny during the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where he took back his opening spot in the team, pushing KL Rahul to bat at number three. Unfortunately, this change did not work as planned, leading to more criticism of the team’s decisions.

Ahead of the fifth Test, India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, was asked about Rohit Sharma’s position in the team. Gambhir, however, gave an unclear response, saying that the playing XI had not been decided yet. He explained that the final decision would be made after looking at the pitch conditions in Sydney. This answer has led to more speculation about Rohit’s future as India’s Test captain and whether he will be dropped for the important final match.

Furthermore, there have been reports suggesting possible internal rifts within the Indian team, with rumors indicating that a senior player might be trying to position themselves as the interim captain. Gambhir responded to these claims by urging that such internal matters should remain within the team and not be discussed publicly, calling them part of normal team dynamics that should not be exaggerated.
The team’s selection in the earlier Tests, such as the decision to leave out Shubman Gill from the Boxing Day Test, also led to some discussions. India needs to win the Sydney Test to level the series and keep their chances of advancing to the WTC final alive. With so much at stake, India’s final playing XI will be crucial in deciding how the match turns out.
As the series comes to an end, cricket fans will be watching closely to see if Rohit Sharma stays in the playing XI and how India will approach this important Test match in Sydney.
