In a significant development following much speculation, Gautam Gambhir has informed the BCCI that he will take on the role of India’s next head coach after the T20 World Cup 2024. An IPL owner confirmed to Cricbuzz that it’s a ‘done deal,’ with a formal announcement expected soon.

The report also mentioned that Gambhir has informed his close associates about his desire to succeed Rahul Dravid as India’s head coach. Shah Rukh Khan, a great admirer of Gambhir’s success with KKR, was also aware of his intentions. Gambhir played a pivotal role in KKR’s dominant IPL 2024 victory, which they secured by defeating Pat Cummins’ Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the final.

The Kolkata based franchise, who won two IPL titles under Gambhir’s leadership in 2012 and 2014, finished the league stage as table toppers with 20 points and a record-breaking NRR of 1.428. It’s worth noting that Gambhir took five breaks during the two-month IPL stint to spend time with his family. Therefore, accepting the prestigious position could present a significant challenge for the 42-year-old.

Before the season began, KKR brought in former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir as their mentor. Gambhir demonstrated his value, successfully transforming a franchise that had finished seventh in the previous two seasons. Following Shreyas Iyer and his team’s dominant eight-wicket victory over Sunrisers in the final, Gambhir celebrated by sharing an inspirational quote from the Mahabharata.

“jiski mati aur gati satya kei ho, uska rath aaj bhi shree krishna chalate hain (Whose thoughts and actions are based on truth, His chariot is still driven by Shri Krishna),” Gambhir wrote on his official ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter) handle.
