The ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 has had many ups and downs, with Australia currently leading the series 2-1 after defeating India in the fourth Test match at Melbourne. At one point during the final session on the fifth day, India seemed in control with 7 wickets in hand, needing to bat for 30-35 overs to draw the game. However, a sudden collapse saw India lose all their wickets in that final session, leading to a disappointing loss.
After this defeat, sources from the Indian media in Australia revealed that Gautam Gambhir, the Indian team coach, held a team meeting where he expressed his deep disappointment with the team’s performance, especially the batting. Although he didn’t name any players specifically, his words were clear and direct. Here are the five key points from Gautam Gambhir’s dressing room chat that went viral:
1. "Everyone should know their responsibility."
Gambhir emphasized the importance of players taking responsibility for their actions. He made it clear that everyone should know their roles and perform when needed. Players should understand the impact of their performance on the team’s success.
2. "Tum log jaag rahe ho ya nahi?" (Are you awake or not?)
Gambhir showed his frustration by questioning the team's urgency and focus. He asked how long they would continue to perform poorly and reminded them they needed to deliver when it mattered. It was a wake-up call for everyone to take their performance seriously.
3. "Records nahi, performance dikhao!" (Show performance, not records!)
While acknowledging the achievements of some players, Gambhir pointed out that the team needed results now. He urged players to stop relying on past records and focus on performing well in the present series.
4. "Top players should know their responsibility."
He reminded senior players that they needed to take more responsibility. The team couldn’t rely on younger players or the lower order to carry the team. Senior players needed to step up and lead by example.
5.“Bahut ho gaya, I’ve had enough,” (Underperformers Were Criticized)
Gambhir didn’t hold back in calling out players who had underperformed. He made it clear that such performances were unacceptable, and those not meeting expectations needed to improve.

This loss not only ended India’s hopes of reaching the 2025 World Test Championship final but also made it hard for them to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. If India had won the final match in Sydney, they could have leveled the series 2-2 and kept the BGT. However, weather conditions on days 4 and 5 of the Sydney Test suggest that the match may end in a draw. Still, India has an outside chance of making it to the WTC final, depending on other teams' results.
Looking ahead to the final Test match in Sydney, all eyes will be on India to see how they respond to Gambhir’s strong words. The series is not over, and India has one last chance to level it 2-2. If they can improve their performance and deliver when needed, they still have a chance to save the series. However, if the mistakes continue, it could be the end of their hopes for both the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the World Test Championship final.
