“Truly remarkable.” That was the phrase Shubman Gill used to describe India’s 4-1 series win in Harare, a scoreline that belies the manner in which India lost the first match and barely does justice to the manner in which they dominated thereafter. The turnaround witnessed in Harare also extended to Gill, who only weeks ago had been left out of the T20 World Cup squad.
Picked to lead an inexperienced squad in Harare, Shubman Gill not only showed good tactical acumen but also shone as an opening batter. Gill top-scored with 170 runs at a strike rate of 126, sending a clear message to the selectors that he’s still up for the challenge. His performance in Harare is sure to bolster his T20I resume, especially in the wake of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s retirements from the format. Gill’s display suggests he is a strong candidate to pair with Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top of the order, though he will face competition for the spot.
“It’s a good thing that everyone’s performing,” Gill said.
“It shows that everyone is hungry and nobody is ready to take it easy. For any country or board, that’s always a good thing.
“Anyone who got the opportunity grabbed it with both hands. The openers to bowlers to allrounders to spinners, everyone made a mark and I think the selectors have now seen everything and it’s up to them to name the squad for the next series (3T20Is, 3 ODIs in Sri Lanka),” he added.
Gill’s Punjab teammate Abhishek Sharma came into the side on the back of a hard-hitting IPL season and seized his opportunities at the top of the order. Sharma’s performance included a century, his first in international cricket, which aligned well with the aggressive style of play India have been adopting. Ruturaj Gaikwad, though not given a chance to open, also showcased his capabilities, adding to the competition.
While Gill’s strike rate of 126 was the lowest compared to Jaiswal (166), Gaikwad (158), and Abhishek (175), the India captain pointed out the challenging pitch conditions that required a more measured approach to set the game up for the middle order. Gill’s captaincy has earned him significant praise, marking him as a key figure in India’s future plans post-Rohit Sharma’s retirement.
“One thing about captaincy I feel is how much confidence you can show in your players. I try to do that and make them believe that if you try and execute the plans, the results will always follow,” Gill said.
“After losing the first match, we were under a bit of pressure. It’s not easy to play back to back games and the series was planned in a way that there were two back-to-back games, a couple of days rest and then again back-to-back games. It’s never easy playing a series like that but I think the way we came back after losing the first T20I was really remarkable.
“I think going 1-0 down in the series and then the way we came back was truly remarkable. Seeing everyone hungry and so quickly adapting to the situation and assessing the conditions was truly spectacular to watch,” he concluded.
India’s dominant series win in Harare, coupled with Gill’s impressive leadership and batting, signals a promising future for the young cricketer. As the team transitions, Gill’s performances and strategic acumen position him as a potential cornerstone of the new era in Indian cricket.
