Star Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya is set to miss the upcoming T20I series against Afghanistan, according to reports from Sports Tak. Despite this setback, there is optimism that Pandya will fully recover in time for the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he is slated to lead the Mumbai Indians right from the commencement of the competition. Pandya sustained an injury during the ODI World Cup, forcing him to sit out the home series against Australia and the subsequent tour in South Africa in December.
The three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, scheduled from January 11 to 17, will serve as India’s final T20I engagement before the World Cup in June. In addition to Pandya’s absence, Suryakumar Yadav is also expected to be sidelined due to an ankle injury sustained while fielding in a T20I match against South Africa. The nature of Yadav’s injury, potentially a tear, may necessitate a recovery period of up to six weeks.
In the context of the IPL, Mumbai Indians recently announced a significant leadership change, appointing Hardik Pandya as the captain for the 2024 season. This decision marked the end of Rohit Sharma’s successful 10-year tenure as the team’s leader, during which he guided the Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles. Pandya’s return to the Mumbai Indians, facilitated by an all-cash trade from the Gujarat Titans, signifies a noteworthy move in the IPL landscape.

The continued absence of Pandya due to injury raises concerns for both the Indian national team and the Mumbai Indians, given his pivotal role as an all-rounder and captain. His dynamic on-field presence and strategic leadership are considered invaluable assets, and his potential unavailability may necessitate strategic adjustments for both the upcoming series and the IPL season. As the T20I series against Afghanistan approaches, the Indian team management will be tasked with exploring options to fill the void left by the injuries to Pandya and Yadav.
