ICC announces the prize money for World Cup 2023

The ICC on Friday confirmed the prize money for the 2023 World Cup, announcing a USD 10 million which is approximately INR 84 crore for the marquee tournament. While the champions will be getting USD 4 million i.e approx. INR 33 crore, the runners-up will receive USD 2 million i.e. approximately INR 16.5 crore. The top four teams in the points table will move on to the next stage to play the semi-finals.

They will have the opportunity to earn prize money for their victories in Group Stage games, USD 40,000 (approx. INR 33 lakh) for each win. Teams eliminated in the group stage will still receive USD 100,000 (INR 8.4 lakh) each.

“The prize money also sets the precedent for the upcoming ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2025, with ICC announcing equal sums for both men’s and women’s events during the Annual Conference held in Durban, South Africa in July 2023,” a release from the ICC read.

India to open WC campaign on October 8

A total of 10 teams will be participating in the 13th edition of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup scheduled to be played in India from October 5. They will compete against each other once in a round-robin format before advancing to the next stage of the tournament.

The final will be played on November 19 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The tournament opens on October 5 with previous years’ finalists, England and New Zealand meeting in Ahmedabad. India will play their first match of the World Cup on October 8against Australia.

Ahead of the main tournament, the teams will also take part in warm-up matches starting September 29. Indian cricket team will face England and Netherlands in their two practice games before the start of the actual tournament.

While most of the teams have announced their squad for the same including India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are yet to announce their final side for the coveted event.
