India posted a challenging total of 171 for 7 in their 20 overs against England at Providence Stadium, Guyana, in the second semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. After a shaky start, with India at 40 for 2 in 5.2 overs, a solid 73-run partnership between Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav steadied the innings and bring win.

The longest winning streaks in T20 World Cup history include 12 consecutive wins from November 2021 to February 2022. This is followed by an ongoing streak of 11* wins from December 2023 to June 2024. In 2020, a streak of 9 wins was recorded from January to December. Additionally, South Africa and India each have current streaks of 8* and 7* wins respectively in 2024. Historically, Sri Lanka achieved a 6-win streak in 2009, and Australia had two separate 6-win streaks in 2010 and 2021.

Rohit Sharma’s crucial knock

Skipper Rohit Sharma played a vital role, scoring 57 off 39 balls, his 32nd T20I fifty. He mixed caution with aggression, hitting six fours and two sixes. His innings provided the necessary stability after the early losses of Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant.

In the T20 World Cup 2024, the top run-scorers include R Gurbaz with 281 runs, T Head with 255 runs, and Rohit Sharma with 248 runs. Notably, Rohit Sharma, at 37 years of age, is having his best T20 World Cup season.

Virat Kohli has been the leading run-scorer in the T20 World Cups twice. When batting at No. 3, he has played 24 innings, scoring 1132 runs at an average of 87.07 and a strike rate of 132.86, with 14 fifties and a highest score of 89*, and without any ducks. As an opener, he has played 7 innings, accumulating 75 runs at an average of 10.71 and a strike rate of 100, with 2 ducks and no fifties, and a highest score of 37.

Wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant showcased his exceptional skills behind the stumps. Drawing inspiration from his mentor, MS Dhoni, Pant executed a crucial stumping that sent Moeen Ali back to the pavilion. Ali, momentarily unsure of the ball’s direction after it brushed his pad, moved down the pitch off-balance. However, Pant’s lightning-sharp reflexes allowed him to swiftly grab the ball and dismantle the leg stump, capitalizing on Ali’s uncertainty and movement.

Suryakumar Yadav’s solid support

Suryakumar Yadav contributed significantly with 47 off 36 balls. His partnership with Rohit was instrumental in pulling India out of trouble and setting a competitive target. Despite a 75-minute rain delay, they assessed the conditions well and mixed caution with aggression both before and after the break.

Lower order contributions

Hardik Pandya played a quick cameo towards the end, boosting the score before being dismissed by Chris Jordan in the 18th over. Ravindra Jadeja added valuable runs, helping India cross the 170-run mark. Chris Jordan was the standout bowler for England, taking 3 wickets for 37 runs.

England’s struggles in chase

England’s captain Jos Buttler won the toss and chose to bowl first. The decision initially seemed to pay off as India lost two early wickets. However, England struggled in their chase, getting bowled out for just 103 runs in 16.4 overs.

Axar Patel’s dominance

Axar Patel was exceptional, quickly dismissing Jos Buttler and bowling Jonny Bairstow. He also stumped Moeen Ali and finished with crucial figures.

Kuldeep Yadav’s impact

Kuldeep Yadav joined the wicket-taking spree, trapping Sam Curran LBW and cleaning up Harry Brook. He claimed his third wicket by dismissing Chris Jordan LBW and also contributed to a run out.

Jasprit Bumrah’s key wickets

Jasprit Bumrah clean bowled Phil Salt and delivered the final blow by dismissing Jofra Archer LBW, wrapping up England’s innings. Arshdeep Singh has taken 15 wickets in the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, leading the tally for the tournament. He is followed by Jasprit Bumrah, who has claimed 13 wickets in the same edition. Historically, RP Singh took 12 wickets in the 2007 T20 World Cup, and Ravichandran Ashwin secured 11 wickets in the 2014 edition.

Revenge taken by India and how

India secured a commanding 68-run victory over England, setting up a final clash with South Africa on June 29. This win marked India’s largest victory margin in T20 World Cup history against England, surpassing their previous best of a 90-run win in 2012. The last instance of a team having an unbeaten run throughout a Men’s ICC tournament was India in the Champions Trophy 2013. No team has had an unbeaten run throughout a T20 World Cup previously.

Axar Patel was named Player of the Match for his brilliant all-around performance.
