Bangladesh strengthened their position in the T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating the Netherlands by 25 runs at the Arnos Vale Stadium in Kingstown on Thursday, June 13. The victory awarded Bangladesh crucial points in Group D, positioning them second in the table and bringing them closer to the Super 8 stages. Despite a rough start to the tournament, the Bangladesh team displayed a cohesive performance that led to their success.
Veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan played a pivotal role in guiding Bangladesh to a competitive total. Shakib, who had been struggling with form, showcased his attacking prowess, handling both short and full deliveries effectively.
His determined innings, supported by opener Tanzid Hasan and later Mahmudullah, helped Bangladesh reach 159/5 in 20 overs. Despite challenging conditions where the ball behaved unpredictably, Shakib’s resilience was key to setting a defendable target.
The Netherlands began their chase confidently, reaching 110/3 by the 15th over. However, young leg-spinner Rishad Hossain turned the game around with a stellar performance in his debut T20 World Cup match. The 21-year-old bowler claimed two crucial wickets in three balls, dismissing Sybrand Engelbrecht and Bas de Leede, which disrupted the Netherlands’ momentum.
Rishad further solidified Bangladesh’s position by taking down the dangerous Logan van Beek in his next over. His exceptional spell resulted in the Netherlands being restricted to 134/8, securing a comprehensive win for Bangladesh.
Mustafizur Rahman, fresh from the Indian Premier League 2024, played a crucial role in containing the Netherlands’ batting lineup. Despite other bowlers struggling, Mustafizur maintained his composure, delivering an economical spell of 4-0-12-1. His key wicket of captain Scott Edwards, who had begun to look comfortable against Bangladesh’s spinners, was vital in tightening the screws on the Dutch chase.
The match also witnessed some spectacular fielding efforts, particularly from Sybrand Engelbrecht, whose stunning catch to dismiss Litton Das was a highlight. Bangladesh’s fielding unit took inspiration from Engelbrecht’s performance, saving crucial runs at the boundary and maintaining pressure on the Netherlands throughout the game.
With this victory, Bangladesh’s hope of progressing in the T20 World Cup 2024 are alive and well. The win also resulted in the elimination of 2014 champions Sri Lanka from the tournament. This marks the fourth consecutive T20 World Cup where Sri Lanka has failed to reach the semi-finals, their last successful campaign being their title win in 2014 against India.
Bangladesh’s cohesive team effort, combined with standout performances from Shakib Al Hasan, Rishad Hossain, and Mustafizur Rahman, showcased their potential to compete fiercely in the remaining stages of the tournament.
