England achieved the fastest victory in T20 World Cup history by defeating Oman on Friday, June 14, at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, West Indies. Led by captain Jos Buttler, England chased down Oman’s target of 48 runs in just 19 balls, securing a win with 8 wickets in hand.
The win over Oman mark England’s biggest victory in T20Is, with 101 balls to spare. This surpasses their previous record of a win with 70 balls to spare against the West Indies in the T20 World Cup 2021. With this triumph, England’s net run rate surged to +3.081, keeping their hopes of reaching the Super 8 stage alive. To qualify, England must defeat Namibia in their final group match and hope Australia beats Scotland.
England won the toss and opted to bowl first. Oman’s batting lineup struggled against England’s formidable bowling attack, getting dismissed for a mere 47 runs in 13.2 overs. Shoaib Khan top-scored for Oman with 11 runs, but no other batsmen managed to reach double figures. Spinner Adil Rashid led the attack with an impressive 4 wickets, while Jofra Archer and Mark Wood contributed significantly with 3 wickets each.
England chased down the required 48-run target in just 19 balls, setting a historic record. Opener Phil Salt contributed 12 runs off 3 balls, while captain Jos Buttler scored a quickfire 24 runs from 8 balls. Jonny Bairstow added 8 runs and Will Jacks chipped in with 5 runs. Buttler’s explosive batting, which included a flurry of boundaries off Bilal Khan’s over — 4, 0, 4, 4, 6, 4 — propelled England to 50/2 in just 3.1 overs.
