IND vs ENG: [Watch] Joe Root gets out while playing the reverse scoop

Star England batter Joe Root’s poor show with the bat continued as he was dismissed for just 18 runs on Day 3 of the third Test against India in Rajkot on Saturday, February 17. However, it was the way of his dismissal that made headlines.

The former England captain tried to play his trademark reverse scoop off Indian speedster Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling in the 40th over of the innings. However, he failed to get a decent connection to hit the ball over the wicketkeeper and the slip cordon. The shot off the edge found Yashasvi Jaiswal at second slip where the youngster had to juggle a couple of times to grab and handed his side to an early breakthrough.

However, Joe Root could only add nine runs to his overnight tally after he had survived the Day 2. The veteran batter’s most recent dismissal to Jasprit Bumrah marks the third time he got out to the pace spearhead in the ongoing series, and the ninth time in his career overall as well.

“Unbelievable catch,” Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar said on the TV broadcast. “It’s very difficult when a batsman is looking to play the reverse scoop to keep your focus on the edge – because suddenly the edge is gone with the reverse scoop. When you’re playing a normal drive, you’re seeing the back of the bat and the edge. Now suddenly you’re seeing the face of the bat, so it’s never easy for a slips fielder to do that. So it’s a great catch.”

Joe Root’s poor form ignites the Bazzball debate

While it was a brilliant piece of fielding from Jaiswal, Joe Root’s shot selection and poor execution amid a poor run of form with the bat, saw him scoring only 18 runs in this match.

“Joe Root is furious with himself because he probably feels he should’ve hit that for four and why was he playing that shot at that particular time,” ex-England opener Nick Knight said in commentary. “It is what they (England) do, but on this occasion Joe Root … will feel like he’s missed out massively.”
