The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to announce a new vice-captain for the Indian ODI team for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
According to recent media reports, Rohit Sharma is likely to continue his ODI leadership role for the upcoming home ODI series against England and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan and the UAE.
While Suryakumar Yadav is the captain of the T20I team, all-rounder Hardik Pandya is also in the line for the captaincy role. However, a recent Times of India report claims that the men’s selectors may announce a new ODI vice-captain for the upcoming ICC event.

The 31-year-old Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is likely to become the new Indian ODI vice-captain for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Due to workload management and present fitness issues, Bumrah will not be present in the upcoming home ODI series against England. If the fast bowler remains fit for the upcoming ICC tournament, he can be chosen as the vice-captain of the Indian team.
Recently, Bumrah led the Indian team in two games in the just-concluded five-match Test series in Australia (Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25). Although India lost the Test series by 3-1, Bumrah-led India won the Test series opener in Perth by 295 runs despite getting bundled out for only 150 runs in the first innings. Bumrah-led India also fought till the end in the last Test at Sydney Cricket Ground, where India were in control despite scoring only 185 runs in the first innings, and pacer Bumrah missed the fourth innings of the Test match due to injury.
In Bumrah’s three-match Test captaincy, all outside India, India won once and lost twice despite performing strongly. He also led Team India in two T20Is during India's tour of Ireland in 2023, where India won both matches. However, he hasn’t experienced the ODI captaincy yet.
