Rain is expected to pose a significant challenge as India face Bangladesh in their second Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua, on Saturday, June 22. The match, scheduled to start at 10:30 AM local time (8:00 PM IST), comes under the shadow of recent rain interruptions that have affected previous matches at the venue.
Two of the last three T20 World Cup 2024 matches in Antigua have been disrupted by rain. The Super 8 match between Australia and Bangladesh on Friday saw the second innings halted after 11.2 overs, leading to Australia securing a 28-run victory through the DLS method. Similarly, England’s must-win group stage match against Namibia experienced a delayed start and was reduced to a 10-over per-side affair, which England won, ensuring their qualification to the next round with help from Australia’s victory over Scotland.
According to AccuWeather, rain showers are predicted in Antigua from 2:00 AM to 3:00 AM, followed by a brief respite. However, thunderstorms are expected to return between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM, coinciding with the scheduled start of the India vs Bangladesh match. Although it is expected to be partly sunny from 11:00 AM onwards, the precipitation level will only drop below 45 percent after 12:00 PM, and remain around 30 percent until 3:00 PM. More thunderstorms are predicted between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM. With humidity levels hovering around 75-80 percent and temperatures around 31 degrees Celsius, the conditions could be challenging. The wind speed is expected to be around 19 km/h at the stadium.
If the match is affected by rain, a minimum of five overs per side must be played for a result to be decided using the DLS method. If even a five-over per-side game is not possible, India and Bangladesh will share a point each. In such a scenario, India will have three points from two matches, while Bangladesh will have one point from two matches. This outcome will be crucial as India aim to secure a semi-final spot with a win over Bangladesh. India’s final Super 8 match is against Australia on Monday, June 24, while Bangladesh will face Afghanistan on Tuesday, June 25.
