The English right-arm fast bowler Mark Wood has been rested for the fourth day of the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka at Old Trafford, Manchester, due to his injury.

During the third day of the first Test of the three-match England vs Sri Lanka Test series, Mark Wood was injured. Just a few overs before the stumps of the day, Wood felt discomfort in his right thigh while running for the third ball of his 11th over of the innings. Joe Root ultimately completed that over by delivering four balls, and he also took the wicket of Milan Rathnayake (10).

Mark Wood has a right thigh muscle injury

Before the early beginning of the fourth day of the ongoing Manchester Test, England Cricket officially confirmed through social media that Wood wouldn’t return to the field. The 34-year-old fast bowler has sustained a right thigh muscle injury. The England medical team will continue to assess his injury.

Earlier, on the third day, Wood earned a wicket on his first delivery in the third innings of the match. He ended the third day with bowling figures of 10.2-1-36-1. In the first innings of this Test match, Wood claimed one wicket in eight overs (8-0-31-1).

On the third day of the ongoing Manchester Test, Wood also shined with the bat. The no.10 right-handed batter scored crucial 22 runs off 13 balls with the help of three fours and one six.

Sri Lanka are fighting in the Manchester Test

After Sri Lanka were bowled out for 236 runs, England scored 358 runs in their first innings and earned the lead of 122 runs. During the England innings, wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith scored a century (111), while Joe Root (42), Harry Brook (56), and the lower-order batters provided important support.

Just like their first innings, Sri Lankan top-order batters lost their wickets early. However, Angelo Mathews (65) and Kamindu Mendis (56*) worked hard to build a strong recovery in the Sri Lankan second innings. At the end of day 3, Sri Lanka scored 204/6 with a lead of 82 runs.

On the fourth day, Sri Lanka scored 275/6 before a rain interruption. While Kamindu Mendis scored 90 not out, Dinesh Chandimal was not out on 57 runs. Sri Lanka now have a lead of 153 runs.
