Mahela Jayawardene, the head coach of the Mumbai Indians, and Zaheer Khan, the director of cricket for MI, have been promoted to new positions by the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners Reliance Industries in an effort to strengthen the team’s reputation in international cricket. The administration of the team realised the necessity for a central team with the growth of MI’s “OneFamily,” which now encompasses MI Cape Town, MI Emirates, and Mumbai Indians. As a result, the “One family of teams” would be consistent in the ethos, principles, and lessons that have made MI one of the most recognisable cricket brands in the world.
Mahela Jayawardene and Zaheer Khan, two MI veterans with extensive understanding of the MI value system and a solid track record, are being elevated to new roles as part of the structure-building process. Mahela Jayawardene has been named the Global Head of Performance, MI, and will provide senior leadership for the franchise’s cricket operations around the world. He will be in charge of each team’s coaching and support systems as well as overall strategic planning, the development of an integrated global high-performance eco-system, and the implementation of MI’s quality standards.
He will be in charge of player development, building on MI’s strong programme for talent identification and grooming and implementing it globally, which has been a key component of MI’s success and philosophy. Every region has its own set of difficulties, and Zaheer’s elevated position will be crucial in assisting MI teams all around the world.
“I’m happy to have Mahela and Zak as part of our global core team. Both have been an integral part of the MI family and embody the spirit of the cricket MI stands for. I’m confident that they would be able to ensure the same flows through all our teams globally and make a difference in the cricketing ecosystems across the globe,”
Akash. M. Ambani, Chairman, Reliance Jio Infocomm, said
“It is an absolute honour for me to lead MI’s global cricket operations. Mrs. Ambani and Akash’s leadership and guidance have made MI the most valued global cricket franchise and I am very happy to see MI grow globally. I look forward to this new responsibility to build a strong cohesive global brand of cricket,”
