Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad clashed in the final of the Indian Premier League 2024 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on May 26. SRH won the toss and opted to bat first. However, their top order collapsed quickly, leaving them reeling at 6 for 2. With no other batter crossing the 25-run mark, SRH found themselves struggling at 90 for 8 after 14 overs. Pat Cummins played a responsible knock of 24 runs at the end, helping SRH post a modest total of 113.

Chasing a target of 114, KKR lost Sunil Narine in the second over. However, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Venkatesh Iyer made the chase look easy with a 92-run partnership for the second wicket. Iyer shined with an unbeaten 52 off 36 balls, leading KKR to victory by 8 wickets. This win secured KKR’s third IPL title.
On that note let us look at some of the key moments from the game;
Mitchell Starc was on fire during the powerplay, and Abhishek Sharma bore the brunt of his ferocity. On the fifth delivery of the first over, Starc bowled an angled ball that initially came in but then nipped away, breaching Abhishek’s defense.
When KKR lost Sunil Narine, it seemed worrisome for the Men-in-Purple. However, Venkatesh Iyer eased the tension by striking Bhuvneshwar for a boundary followed by two consecutive sixes. That over yielded 20 runs and further dampened SRH’s hopes.
Following a dominant performance in the grand finale, KKR secured their third IPL trophy, adding to their victories in 2012 and 2014. Notably, KKR defeated SRH in both Qualifier 1 and the final, both in one-sided affairs. Skipper Shreyas Iyer accepted the IPL 2024 trophy and the winner’s cheque of INR 20 crore for Kolkata Knight Riders.
