In an exciting Qualifier 2 of the Indian Premier League 2024 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) defeated Rajasthan Royals (RR) by 36 runs to secure their spot in the finals. Batting first, SRH posted a total of 175/9. Heinrich Klaasen top-scored with 50 off 34 balls at a strike rate of 147.06, followed by Rahul Tripathi’s quick 37 off 15 balls and Travis Head’s 34 off 28 balls.

However, their opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head struggled again, with Sharma losing his wicket early when SRH had only 13 runs on the board. Trent Boult was impressive for RR, taking 3 wickets. Chasing a target of 176, RR started strong with Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring 42 off 21 balls at a strike rate of 200, and Dhruv Jurel adding a resilient 56 off 35 balls. Despite their efforts, RR fell short and were eliminated from IPL 2024 in Qualifier 2.

Shahbaz Ahmed was the standout bowler for SRH, claiming 3 wickets with an economy of 5.75 in his four overs. Pat Cummins continues to excel as a captain, leading SRH to the IPL final and eyeing more victories, including the World T20 Championship and the 50-over Cricket World Cup. It’s a remarkable achievement for the man from New South Wales.

On that note let us look at top three turning points of the game;

Abhishek Sharma dismisses Sanju Samson

Throughout the game, several turning points emerged, but a crucial moment was the dismissal of RR’s skipper and in-form batter, Sanju Samson. Observing the pitch conditions, SRH’s captain, Pat Cummins, made a brilliant decision to introduce Abhishek Sharma into the attack in this crucial game. Known for his explosive batting in IPL 2024, Sharma’s bowling proved pivotal. Cummins entrusted him with the ball in a high-pressure situation, and Sharma delivered by taking the key wicket of Samson.

Avesh Khan dismisses Abdul Samad for a golden duck

Avesh Khan regained control during his second spell after being hit hard in the initial overs. He claimed Nitish Kumar Reddy’s wicket with a wide yorker, looking lethal in his delivery. Abdul Samad then entered the fray, delivering a fuller-length ball that nipped in and rattled the stumps. This is certainly not the first time when right hand quick has impressed fans with his comeback spells but this time around it was essential considering how destructive Samad can be towards the end of the innings.

Rahul Tripathi the savior for SRH

Amid all the struggling innings which were played in the match, the innings of Tripathi stands out to be the best. Throughout the innings the right hand batter looked to attack the RR bowling. Once again, Sunrisers Hyderabad lost their first wicket in the opening over as Trent Boult dismissed the dangerous Abhishek Sharma. Rahul Tripathi then came to the crease and played his shots with ease, scoring a rapid 37 off 14 deliveries before being dismissed by Boult.
