Dewald Brevis is CSK as a replacement for Gurjapneet Singh

Chennai Super Kings have made a bold mid-season move, signing South African youngster Dewald Brevis as a replacement for injured pacer Gurjapneet Singh for the rest of the IPL 2025 season. The 21-year-old joins CSK for INR 2.2 Crore, significantly higher than his base price of INR 75 Lakh at the auction late last year.

This move comes at a crucial time for CSK, who are sitting at the bottom of the points table with just two wins from seven games. Injuries and poor form have plagued their campaign so far, and with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad already ruled out, the management has been on the lookout for players who can shake things up. In Brevis, they’ve brought in someone with raw talent, big-match temperament, and serious firepower.

Known to fans as 'Baby AB' because of his striking similarity to AB de Villiers, Brevis is not just hype. He has played 81 T20s, scored 1,787 runs, and holds a staggering strike rate close to 145. His top score? A jaw-dropping 162, scored off just 57 balls in South Africa’s domestic T20 league. At 21, he’s already showing signs of a future star.

A Rising Star Who's Already Making Waves

Brevis made his T20I debut for South Africa in 2023 and has played two international matches so far. But he first grabbed headlines during the 2022 U-19 World Cup, where he smashed 506 runs, setting a tournament record. That tournament cemented his name as one to watch. He’s no stranger to the IPL either. Brevis was part of the Mumbai Indians setup, where he played 10 matches, and he continues to represent the MI teams in both the SA20 and MLC.

Earlier this year in SA20, he was on fire, finishing among the top 10 run-scorers with a blistering strike rate of 184.17, the highest in that bracket. He’s been in good touch for the Titans back home too, scoring consistently across formats. With CSK’s middle order misfiring apart from the efforts of Rachin Ravindra and Shivam Dube, Brevis arrives at the perfect time to add some much-needed spark.

This is CSK’s second replacement signing of the season. They had earlier brought in young Mumbai batter Ayush Mhatre to fill in for Gaikwad. Now, Brevis joins the mix, and fans are already buzzing with excitement, especially after his cryptic yellow-themed Instagram post on Friday afternoon that hinted at a move to CSK. The timing couldn’t be better either. CSK’s next match is against their arch-rivals Mumbai Indians, on April 20 at the Wankhede. A debut against his former team? That would be quite the script.
