In the first time ever in the history of MA Chidambaram Stadium, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) finally conquered their 17 years drought against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at this venue. They succeeded in this pity championship, with demandavers enjoying 50 runs and recording their first victory in Chennai since 2008.

RCB's Innings:

After a cautious start, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) put up a competitive total of 196/7 in their 20 overs. Phil Salt scored 32 runs in just 16 balls at the beginning, and his explosive innings provided impetus to RCB's run rate. On the other hand, Rajat Patidar did a splendid job of stabilizing the innings with his patient 51 before falling to Shahrukh Khan. Tim David single-handedly took charge in the supplementary period with his swashbuckling innings that ended with a hat-trick of sixes, courtesy of Sam Curran, to post a challenging total of 197 in their 20 overs.

CSK's Response:

In their innings, Ruutu Raj Gaikwad got out early as Josh Hazlewood trapped him lbw and then trapped Rahul Tripathi in front, leaving CSK at 15/2. Rachin Ravindra gave it a good go with 40 runs on the scoreboard, but CSK was facing some problems at that point and could only manage 146 for the loss of 8 wickets in their 20 overs. Royal Challengers Bengaluru's Yash Dayal provided a couple of timely dismissals that further discounted CSK from the pursuit, and eventually, they ended at 146/8 in 20 overs.

Key Performances:

Rajat Patidar (RCB): The 51 blossomed as he revealed the real leader hidden behind all those shortcomings.

Josh Hazlewood (RCB): 3 wickets for 21 runs, stifling CSK's top order.

Yash Dayal (RCB): Crucial double strike, dismantling CSK's middle order.

Rachin Ravindra (CSK): Struggled until he made a sweet 40-run score that gave the crowd something to cheer for.

With this victory, RCB conquered the points table by moving to the apex position in the IPL 2025 ladder; CSK, on the other hand, slipped down to the fifth position after a major defeat.

What the Players Said:

Rajat Patidar (RCB Captain & Player of the Match)

Rajat Patidar, who was in the center stage of the match due to his winning innings, first off has explained the significance of this win:

  • "If I talk about this match, it was a good total on this surface because the ball was stopping a bit, and it wasn’t easy for batters to hit fours and sixes."
  • "It's always great to play at Chepauk as the fans here are amazing, they are the ones who bring out the best in you and the team with their support."
  • "I feel it was important to get the 200 because we had aimed for it and that no one could chase such a complex score."

Ruturaj Gaikwad (CSK Captain)

Even after the defeat, Gaikwad was still unfazed and argued that they just did not judge the conditions the right way:

  • "I still feel 170 was a par score on this wicket. A bad day in the fielding cost us. When you are chasing 20 runs extra on a sticky wicket, you have to bat differently."
  • "lights predominantly began changing over the next phase of the game with it becoming a bit slower not to mention sticky. Also, there's nowhere around this, I don't know what happened during the game. That's just the nature of human psychology. Rahul, right, back to his shot which he believed. I back mine up too, sometimes it is good, sometimes it couldn't be."
  • "It is still a good thing that we were not defeated by a large amount, that is, we lost only 50 runs."

Historical Significance

  • This was RCB’s first victory at Chepauk since April 28, 2008.
  • Prior to this fixture, CSK had been absolutely dominant in this fixture at their home ground, with a record of 8 wins out of 10 games played at this venue.
  • RCB’s new captain, Rajat Patidar, has joined these captains' ranks by being only the second RCB skipper to lead them to a victory at Chepauk.

CSK will now look to bounce back in their next game, while RCB will aim to maintain momentum in their upcoming fixtures. This match not only breaks a long-standing jinx for RCB but also sets the tone for an exciting IPL 2025 season ahead!
