On April 3, 2025, the IPL 2025 game between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) was played at the Eden Gardens.

Match Highlights:

KKR Innings: KKR went in first and made a great 200/6 in 20 overs. Venkatesh Iyer drilled out 60 off Pat Cummins in 20 balls of the penultimate over of the innings and went with 20 runs. Angkrish Raghuvanshi provided the team with 50 off 32 balls, while Ajinkya Rahane (38) was the strong anchor. Rinku Singh played the role of the leading middle-order batsman, finishing the innings with 32 off 15 balls, being not out.

Pace battery comprising Pat Cummins (1/17), Mohammed Shami (1/23), Harshal Patel (1/33), Zeeshan Ansari (1/13), and Kamindu Mendis (1/11) shared the workload, claiming one wicket each. Cummins ousted Quinton de Kock for only 1, while Mendis ended the partnership between Raghuvanshi and Rahane by dismissing the former in the 10th over.

SRH Innings: In pursuit of 201, SRH failed miserably, making only 120 in 18 overs. The top order was gone by 6.4 overs at just 44/4. Klaasen (23) and Cummins (14) later on in the innings could just put up a resistance, but further casualties of Chakravarthy and A. Russell led to a certain victory for KKR.

The trio of Chakaravarthy, Arora, and Russell restricted the run rate of the opposition, SRH, so the 80-run win for KKR eventually meant that they, the table toppers, had started their journey of the IPL 2025 season on a high note.

Post-Match Reactions – KKR vs SRH

  • Vaibhav Arora (POTM): "I am always ready as management has informed me beforehand a head of time about my role. In the 5th and 6th over, when the ball stops swinging, cutters become very important. I also sometimes mix in some yorkers. In team meetings, we prepare for every batter and execution executers is our only focus. We have a simple strategy to strike early in the powerplay so that Varun and Narine can then dominate with their world class spin later on."

  • Varun Chakaravarthy (KKR): "Angkrish played a great innings, Venky was the anchor, and Rinku came to the party with a big score. Perhaps 200 was a par score, it could also be said that our target was about 10 runs short of enough. Our pacers have been quite accurate so far. Rahane was a very good captain, and Russell was fantastic in his handling of the last few overs. Klaasen is an excellent T20 batter, and therefore it was impossible for us to dismiss him lightly. We went for this strategy after our last loss, where everything was about not giving away too many runs to side with the batters so they could win the match."
  • Pat Cummins (SRH): "Certainly, it was not a good night for us. 200 was a total that we should have chased but we ended up short. We've got terrific hitters who can attack but there was a possibility of going for different types of players. Ten to fifteen extra runs were the result of fielding errors. According to the game situation, we didn't hesitate to go for spin only for three overs, because on the other hand the cutters were quite useful. We have a lot of matches to play, so instead of getting sulked, we look at where else we could go and find other ways."
