In a riveting encounter in IPL 2025 Match 40, Delhi Capitals (DC) showed a complete performance to defeat Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) by 8 wickets with 13 balls to spare. From disciplined bowling to clinical batting, the Capitals were in control throughout the game, and with the emphatic win, they rose further up the tournament table.
Batting first, the Super Giants collected 159 runs for 6 wickets off 20 overs. Aiden Markram scored 52 runs off 33 balls while playing some consummate shots. He had the able support of Mitchell Marsh with 45 runs off 36 balls, and then Ayush Badoni contributed a handy 36 runs off 21 balls at the end to build their total. The Capitals' bowlers stuck to their guns, though, with Mukesh Kumar being the best of the lot with his excellent bowling spell of 4 wickets for 33 runs from 4 overs. Mitchell Starc and Dushmantha Chameera were the others with 1 wicket.
In reply, the Capitals chased down the score without too much drama, finishing 161/2 in just 17.5 overs. KL Rahul's innings of 57* off 42 balls was calm and composed. He saw a good batting performance from Abishek Porel, who aggressively scored 51 runs from just 36 balls. Axar Patel finished in style with a blazing score of 34* runs off 20 balls. The Capitals' top order demolished the LSG bowlers, Aiden Markram being the only one who made an impact with the ball at two wickets for 30 runs off three overs. The rest of the bowlers bowled poorly and failed to get a wicket.
Mukesh Kumar (Player of the Match): Mukesh Kumar received Player of the Match due to his excellent bowling performance. He went on to say about his process, saying that talking to Chameera and Starc before the game to understand how the pitch behaved was really important for him. He said the ball stopped a bit, so he focused on what lengths to hit and how to mix the variations up, which worked for him. He thinks his best ball was getting the wicket of Mitchell Marsh, a really big wicket for him and his team. Mukesh said he was really happy with the performance, especially due to struggling earlier in the season, and hoped to keep this momentum going.
Axar Patel (Delhi Capitals Captain): Axar Patel said it was an up-and-down game. He said the team did not take wickets in the powerplay but managed to pull it back due to all bowlers chipping in. Axar said he had a finger injury, but he felt better for this game, and he joined back for the power play. He emphasized how important fielding is and that dropped catches have been an issue. On batting at number 4, he said he played to his strengths and tried to hit some specific bowlers.
Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants Captain): Rishabh Pant said they were 20 runs short and that the toss and pitch conditions in Lucknow are always a factor. He said it took too long to get 30/31 runs, as it allows the bowlers to settle and find rhythm. Pant said the loss was tough, but they regrouped for their next match, but he emphasized that if they can find their potential, everything else will be taken care of. He added when their top 3 batsmen score, teams are always pressured.
