The Indian Premier League (IPL) retention, Right to Match (RTM), and many other auction rules have been revealed for the 2025 season.
Last Saturday (September 28), the IPL 2025 retention rule was revealed. Each team can retain up to six players before the IPL 2025 mega auction. Among the six retained players, one must be an uncapped player for the price of INR 4 crore. Players, who didn’t appear in the playing XI in any international cricket format in the last five years or have no BCCI central contract for the last five years, can also be counted as uncapped players.
Out of the maximum six retentions, each team can retain up to a maximum of five capped players and two uncapped players.

Values of other capped retentions
Each team can allot a maximum of INR 120 crores to set up the team for the IPL 2025. The retention value will be deducted from the INR 120 crore purse.
Meanwhile, the remaining five retained capped players can all be Indian or overseas. Talking about the retention value of each of the five players (excluding the retention of the uncapped player), these will be followed as per the below values.
Player Number |
Retention value |
Player 1 |
INR 18 crores |
Player 2 |
INR 14 crores |
Player 3 |
INR 11 crores |
Player 4 |
INR 18 crores |
Player 5 |
INR 14 crores |
RTM option
Teams can use the Right to Match (RTM) during the IPL 2025 mega auction to bring back a player who was not retained.
If a franchise uses all six retentions, they will have no RTM power for the IPL 2025 mega auction. If a team selects fewer retentions, the team will have RTM power for the remaining slots in the IPL 2025 mega auction.
For example, if a team retains four capped players and one uncapped player, the team will have one RTM power. With this RTM, the team can fulfill by choosing one capped player or one uncapped player during the IPL 2025 mega auction.
Retention deadline
The pre-auction retention deadline has been set till 5 PM IST on October 31, 2024.
