The Indian Premier League (IPL) has come up with strict action against overseas players who make themselves unavailable for an IPL season without legitimate reasons after being bought at an auction.

In the recent IPL tournaments, the issue became a headache for the franchises as few overseas players were unavailable for the complete IPL season without legitimate reasons despite being bought at an auction.

During the IPL 2024, English players Jason Roy, Harry Brook, and David Willey (withdrew his name after the beginning of the IPL 2024) and Australian cricketer Adam Zampa cited personal reasons to withdraw their names from the tournament.

Two-year ban

According to a recent ESPNcricinfo report, if the players can’t appear in the tournament after being bought at an auction and can’t show the legitimate reasons, the players will face a two-year ban from the tournament.

If the name withdrawal happens due to any injury or medical reason, it will have to be confirmed by the player’s home board.

Highest price tags for overseas players in the mini auction

Also, the IPL has set the highest price tags for overseas players in the mini auction. It is now mandatory for overseas players to register their names in the mega auction to secure their appearances for the subsequent mini auction.

An overseas player’s price tag for the mini auction will always be smaller than the highest retention price or the highest auction price at the mega auction.

While the highest retention price has been set now at INR 18 crore, if the highest auction price at the mega auction goes to INR 20 crore, the highest cap for the overseas player in the mini auction will be INR 18 crore. Meanwhile, if the highest auction price at the mega auction goes to INR 15 crore, the highest cap for the overseas player in the mini auction will be INR 15 crore.

During the IPL 2024 auction, SunRisers Hyderabad bought Australian right-arm pacer Pat Cummins for the record auction bid of INR 20.50 crore. However, later in that same auction, Kolkata Knight Riders beat that with a bid of INR 24.75 crore for another Australian left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc.
