Indian captain Rohit Sharma is heavily struggling with the bat in Test cricket. While the right-handed batter is disappointed in his batting form, there is a big speculation rising about ending his Test career.
Captain Rohit Sharma had a great time in most of 2024, where he led the Indian team to win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. His batting played a powerful role in India’s second T20 World Cup trophy win. Before that, India dominantly won the home Test series against England (by 4-1), and the Indian skipper Rohit scored two centuries and one half-century in that series.
However, the last three months have been very tough for the skipper Rohit Sharma. His poor batting form in Test cricket started during the home Test series against Bangladesh, which India won very comfortably by 2-0.
However, the hosts India were stunned by New Zealand in the three-match Test series, where the visitors won the series 3-0 to create an unforgettable history. In that Test series, the Indian captain scored only 20+, which was a half-century in the Bengaluru Test (52).
In the ongoing Australia tour, Rohit Sharma missed the five-match Test series opener in Perth as he was on parental leave. Under the leadership of stand-in captain Jasprit Bumrah, India won that Test match by 295 runs, despite scoring only 150 runs in the first innings.

In the return of the regular Test captain Rohit Sharma, India suffered a 10-wicket defeat in the day-night pink ball Test match at Adelaide Oval and survived the Gabba Test due to major rain interruptions. While the right-handed Indian batter came to bat at no.6 position in the Adelaide and Brisbane Tests, he scored 3, 6, and 10 runs, respectively.
In the Melbourne Test, while the hosts Australia scored 474 runs in the first innings, the Indian captain had another awful day with the bat in India’s first innings. Coming to bat as an opener with Yashasvi Jaiswal in India’s first innings of the Melbourne Test, Rohit only managed to face five balls and scored three runs before the Australian captain Pat Cummins dismissed him.
In the last eight Tests, Rohit has scored only 155 runs in 14 innings, with an average of 11.07. During this period, he managed only two 20+ scores, including one half-century. There is no doubt about the Indian captain Rohit Sharma’s tough time at the present moment.

While the legendary off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin just announced his retirement from international cricket at the end of the Brisbane Test, Rohit’s Test future has also come under question. The Indian cricket batting line-up has entered the transition period, and the skipper is failing to handle this challenge.
As Jasprit Bumrah has shown his captaincy caliber in a short time, and the team has some matured players like KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, and Rishabh Pant, along with the legend and former captain Virat Kohli, Rohit’s present form is disturbing his place security in Test cricket. The experts have also questioned Rohit’s Test captaincy.
