When Jasprit Bumrah started his career, former fast bowlers expressed concern over his action, saying he has the potential of causing injury due to the stress his action puts on his back. He started his journey well though, going without injury for the first two years. By 2018 though, Bumrah was an all-format player, and his injury troubles began.
His first injury was during the England tour back in 2018. Jasprit Bumrah was earmarked as a key player for the tour after his stellar performance in South Africa. A thumb injury though, while attempting a catch put a doubt on his participance. He missed two Tests, but came back for the Final three. His performance was good for India in those three Tests.
After the 2019 World Cup, Jasprit Bumrah suffered a back injury. He took a Test hat-trick in the Caribbean, but the burden of playing all three formats took a toll on him as a back issue started setting in. Jasprit Bumrah was later diagnosed with a stress factor, causing him to miss the home Test season, keeping him from playing his first Test in India. He took a fair amount of time to recover, before making a comeback in New Zealand after three months.
The stress fracture was his first severe injury, while the next one turned out to be a minor one. On India’s tour to Australia in 2020, Jasprit Bumrah was the leader of the attack, and without Mohammad Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav, the burden on him was high. He carried the pace attack, full of youngsters, bowling his heart out to keep India in the series.
With India going through the motions and staring at a huge chase in Sydney, Jasprit Bumrah continued to bowl his heart out. His pace was depleting though. The burden of three Tests though took a toll on him as he joined a long list of injured players. He was ruled out of the Final Test with an abdominal strain, leaving India with a very inexperienced bowling attack. To his and India’s fortune, Bumrah was back rather quickly. He played in the Test series against England three weeks later, marking his first Test at home.
After another year of international cricket, Jasprit Bumrah is hit with injury issues again. This time, the injuries are rather irritating, given the time constraints and nature of the injury. The back injury was first noticed when Jasprit Bumrah was on vacation after the 2022 tour to England. He went on to miss the Asia Cup. His absence was deeply felt as India struggled in the death. He continued to sit out as Bumrah missed the first T20I against Australia, before coming back for the next two. His comeback though has been shortlived.
With South Africa facing India, Jasprit Bumrah missed the first T20I due to a niggle. The niggle though seems a little more serious as Bumrah is now ruled out of the entire series, after complaining of a back pain again. With his back not fully fit, the latest injury puts doubt on his participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup. He is currently in a race against time, and India will be monitoring him carefully. With Ravindra Jadeja already out, Bumrah’s absence will be huge, and India will deeply be hoping he can show up at some stage in the tournament.
