BCCI secretary Jay Shah opened up about the possibility of Hardik Pandya replacing Rohit Sharma as the full-time skipper of the Indian T20I team. On Saturday, Rohit Sharma decided to retire from T20Is after leading India to victory in the T20 World Cup held in the Caribbean and the United States of America (USA).
Hardik Pandya, who has previously captained India in Rohit’s absence, is now a strong contender for the role. Shah mentioned that Rohit’s replacement will be announced after discussions with the selectors.
Following their T20 World Cup triumph, India is set to play a 5-match T20I series against Zimbabwe starting July 6 at the Harare Sports Club. With several key players missing, Shubman Gill will lead the team in the series. Gill was part of the travelling reserves for the World Cup, along with Rinku Singh, Avesh Khan, and Khaleel Ahmed. After the Zimbabwe tour, India will head to Sri Lanka for a 3-match T20I series later this month, with the skipper for that series yet to be decided.

“Captaincy will be decided by the selectors, and we will announce it after discussing with them. You asked about Hardik, there were lot of questions over his form but we and selectors showed faith in him and he proved himself,” Jay Shah said.
Hardik Pandya has captained India in 16 T20Is, securing 10 victories. He has also served as the captain in three ODIs. In 2022, Pandya led the Gujarat Titans to their maiden IPL title, showcasing his leadership capabilities.
