Jay Shah, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is set to replace Greg Barclay as the next chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Sources confirmed that Barclay, who has been in office since 2020, will not seek a third term. In a video conference with ICC directors, including Cricket Australia's chair Mike Baird, Barclay expressed his decision to step down in November, paving the way for Shah’s appointment. Shah has received strong backing from influential cricket boards, including those of England and Australia, securing the numbers needed to be elected.

BCCI secretary poised for leadership role at ICC

Shah, the son of India’s home minister Amit Shah, will become the fifth Indian to hold this prestigious position. He follows in the footsteps of prominent Indian figures such as Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar, who have previously held leadership roles in the ICC. With his election set for November, Shah will make history as the youngest chairman of the ICC at just 35 years old.

Election process and future prospects

The ICC chairman’s election requires 16 voting members, and a simple majority of nine votes (51%) is needed to secure the post. Previously, a two-thirds majority was required for election, but the rules were amended to lower the threshold. Shah, who has garnered widespread goodwill among ICC voting members, is considered to have strong support in his bid for the position.

Currently, Shah has one year remaining as BCCI secretary before facing a mandatory cooling-off period of three years, starting in October 2025. According to BCCI’s Supreme Court-approved constitution, office bearers can serve for a maximum of six consecutive years before a cooling-off period is required. Shah’s decision to transition to the ICC would leave him with four years of eligibility remaining within the BCCI after his term at the ICC ends.
