With his second century in the ongoing Lord’s Test, former England Test captain Joe Root created a new history in English cricket. The right-handed batter has now recorded the most Test centuries by an English batter.
After scoring 143 runs off 206 balls with 18 fours in the first innings of the ongoing Lord’s Test against Sri Lanka, the no.1-ranked Test batter Joe Root scored 103 runs off 121 balls in England’s second innings. During his latest Test century, the right-handed English batter hit ten fours.

Root’s latest Test century was his 34th Test hundred. With the latest century, Root broke Sir Alastair Cook’s 33 Test centuries record and set up a new record for most Test centuries by an English batter.

Joe Root is in the list of top 10 most Test centuries
Meanwhile, in the list of the top 10 most Test centuries, Root’s 34th Test century equalled the legendary batters Sunil Gavaskar, Brian Lara, Younis Khan, and Mahela Jayawardene’s Test centuries records. With one more Test hundred, Root will climb to the sixth place in the list of most Test centuries.

Joe Root became the fourth batter to score centuries in both innings of a Lord's Test
On the other hand, Joe Root became the fourth batter to score centuries in both innings of a Lord’s Test match. After the Caribbean cricketer George Headley became the first batter to record centuries in both innings of a Lord’s Test (1939), English batters Graham Gooch (1990) and Michael Vaughan also achieved this special feat (2004).

In the meantime, Root also set another new record. By scoring 103 runs during the third innings of the ongoing Lord’s Test, the right-handed English batter recorded the most Test runs at Lord’s. His latest innings surpassed the previous record of Graham Gooch’s 2015 Test runs at Lord’s. After the end of the third innings in the ongoing Lord’s Test against Sri Lanka, Root scored 2022 Test runs in 40 innings (22 Tests).

With his latest Test century, Root also recorded the most Test centuries at Lord’s. It was his seventh Test hundred at Lord’s, which surpassed the previous record of most Test hundreds at Lord’s with six centuries by the English batters Graham Gooch and Michael Vaughan.
So, Joe Root now records most Test runs and most Test centuries in an English ground.
